Wiring harness question

This winter I want to pull my steering column and restore it. I will replace the turn signal switch while it is apart. I will also be removing the switch cluster and gauge cluster for restoration. When I have all of this stuff out I'm thinking maybe I would replace the wiring harness under the dash. Your thoughts please. Also, it seems to me I read on here a while back that wiring harnesses were on backorder. Can someone provide an update on that please.

I just checked Roseville's website and they don't list a dash harness for 72-74. Are they available?

I don't know about the harness but while the coloum is apart I'd also replace the ignition switch as well as the turn signal switch.    Cheap insurance while your in there.....

Unfortunately Year One is one of the only places to buy a M&H main dash wire harness....
Don't even start to complain about "shipping" until you try living in Canada

I am doing the turn signal switch. Wasn't going to do the ignition switch as I like the idea of still using the original keys. How prone is the ignition to failure?

YES M&H is the ONLY manufacture of the main dash harness. Primarily available from YearOne but some others may re-sell them like Jamie at Mega Parts, not sure about David at Roseville.

Changing the ignition switch inside the column has nothing to do with the ignition lock cylinder, so your keys remain the same

Depending what's wrong with your harness may steer you toward m&h.  But my main harness was only bad at the bulkhead connection.   I found one in eBay for $40 I think.  Changed it out in a day.

I replaced my Challenger dash harness with a new one from M&H but I really didn't need to.  After setting the two harnesses side by side, I realized that the original harness wasn't in bad shape.  The main dash harness is the most expensive harness on the car. 

On my Dart, I cleaned up the original harness before I made the decision on whether to replace it or not.  It looked really bad and mice had gotten to a few wires.  Since the Dart is a convertible, the harness was exposed to the elements and looked a lot worse then the Challenger's.  However, after all the wires were cleaned up, it didn't look that bad.  I replaced a few wires that were chewed up and put new ends on others.  Then I tested for continuity on both ends of the harness.  The harness turned out nice and I saved $500+. 

If you do the alternator bypass wire and relay modifications, you'll take a lot of the load off the main dash harness.  Unless the original harness is all cut up from previous owners, I'd save the money and clean up what you have.

I ordered my harness from classical performance. Dash and engine. I was tires of mysterious electrical gremlins. They aren't cheap but now I finally have confidence in my car not breaking down and leaving me to figure out rap on the side of the road!

I never have figured out rap....  Well other than I'm convinced the "C" is invisible.... But not silent....  Therefore what others call "rap" I call "Crap"....

Regardless of "clean" you get the outside of the wires, the copper inside is still 45 years old

Thanks for you input guys. I really appreciate that. I've had my car for 5 summers and have never had an electrical issue. I just thought with the gauges removed it would be easier to replace the wiring. It has been hacked a bit by the collection of owners (4) but it's never let me down and I have no reason to think that it will. Now I have to decide if I'm going to spend about $700 CDN or put that money somewhere else.
