Help setting lifter preload
« on: December 17, 2016 - 02:39:11 PM »
New build, 300 miles on it, 505, lunati cam and hydraulic lifter package, smith bros rods, Harland sharp roller rockers, trickflow heads.  Had a 1/2 turn of preload on them but am adjusting up to 3/4 turn to see if the valve train noise settles down.

Because the motor has been running the lifters are all pumped up. When I get to zero lash and then turn 1/2 turn or to 3/4 turn the rocker is pushing the spring/valve open slightly (lifter plunger isn't compressing) This doesn't seem ok to me - help?

Thanks

They should bleed down, it might take 15-20 seconds but they absolutely should bleed down...

Yes but the oil is still trapped between the body & the plunger... If theres no pressure on the plunger the oil stays in the void... If theres significant pressure the check valve shuts & the oil is trapped making the lifter act like a solid... But if you slowly screw the adjuster down the oil will bleed..... Your only adding 1/4 turn, you should be able to add that all in one shot & the lifters should bleed down....
