Engine heat getting inside of car. Because of Shaker ?
« on: December 18, 2016 - 09:57:34 AM »
I'm determined to get rid of the heat inside of car, primarily drivers side, but have ran out of ideas as to how. Its a 383 shaker with stock exhaust manifolds. Everything inside is covered with dynamat and reflectix. The inside vent/heater box works perfectly. The heater hose is shut off. New shaker seal. New rubber seal between the hood and body near windshield base. This has all been done in the past and made no difference. I can still feel heat coming out of the vent box near left foot. :banghead:

Here's what I suspect is going on.....  Even though the shaker to hood seal is new, engine heat is escaping from the opening and coming into the exterior air vents at base of windshield. Anyone have ideas on how to test this or have had issues like this and fixed them ?

If your theory about air getting into the cowl vents is correct, you should be able to test it easily enough. Do you actually feel hot air coming in through the driver vent? Does it diminish when you close that vent? It might be a little trouble but I suppose you could tape off your cowl vents at the windshield as a test just to confirm this before going further.

I'm wondering if it isn't coming from the transmission instead. They are capable of generating tons of heat and they are close to that area. I know the dynamite should handle that but it wouldn't hurt to remove your center console to get your hand under the carpet and feel the tunnel area.

I would try to narrow down if it is heat radiating from somewhere through the metal into the cabin or if it is simply hot air being funneled in from somewhere. Once you know this, you can narrow things down better and focus your efforts with better result.

That's my 2 cents.

check that your cowl to hood seal is installed properly. I have seen many seals installed backwards. Also check cowl lip above the wiper motor, that is a weak spot and will sag low allowing hot air to pass the seal and enter the vent.

Another source for heat is the steering column. Mine was missing the dust seal and hot air was blowing into the car. I started to notice that the ignition key was hot after a long drive.

I didn't like the factory style steering column seals so I made one using a heater hose. It seals a lot better.

The cowl seal is pointing the correct direction and when I installed the new one, I even used an door edging that fits perfectly inside of it to stiffen it up more. You just gave me an idea....I 'll smear some grease along the top edge, close the hood and after I open it check to see if any didn't transfer to the hood.

I have a manual and I placed a piece of inner tube rubber over the hole and everything is sealed up so that nothing can come from there.

The heat is coming from the driver side vent. The passenger side doesn't have any issues. I'll double check the seal above the wiper motor though.

Thanks everyone.  :clapping:

Do you have the rear fender splash shields installed?

if these are missing all kinds of hot air will its way into the car - either through the cowl or where the door does not seal correctly in the pocket.
