70 Challenger RT numbers matching four speed
« on: December 18, 2016 - 11:20:56 AM »
So I'm cleaning up a Flat hood car and it's looking like I may keep it. If so, I will probably let my RT go some point next year. Just trying to ballpark some figures to help me make some final decisions.

It's a 70 RT with the 383 and a four speed. It's all numbers matching and it was made in August 1969 at the L.A. Plant. Still wearing it's original Go Mango paint. Black interior car with no console, no power steering, no upgrades except a black vinyl top and the remote chrome mirror. No build sheet but do have fender tag.

The front end suffered moderate damage in its past. Enough to wipe out radiator and support. As a result, it has new fenders and hood. The clown who did repairs did a horrible job patching in the radiator support. Before I sell it, I plan to make the front end look new and I'll leave it in primer. I'll still disclose to buyer but I won't sell it unless it's arrow straight and invisible. The numbers on the radiator support are gone so that part will be all that is not numbers matching. Vin stamps are good on block and trans case.

Rest of the car is fantastic. Engine, brakes, suspension was professionally rebuilt before I bought it. Zero mileage, looks awesome, runs super strong. Door alignment is great.

The only rust is minor holes at bottom of front and rear glass. I'll patch those prior to sale. Water that got into trunk caused deep pits but no holes. Could be repaired but I'd consider replacing. Inside area looks great. Vinyl roof removed years ago and roof metal looks fantastic.

Car would come with original rallye dash in nice working condition, very nice front and rear black door panels, and nice grille, tail lights, etc. My thought was to do all repairs, assemble so it's running and driving, and leave final paint, body work, and interior to the new owner.

Sorry for so much info. But I'd like to get a realistic idea on value so I know how much effort to put into it before selling. Is 20k possible on a car like I described after work is done?

Not sure of value, but I'd leave as is, new buyer would probably be better off.
Most people shy away from newly repaired items.

You make a good point but I bought it for a super low price because it needed the repairs I mentioned. I'd rather keep it rather than sell it low. It's been my experience that people shy away from something needing work that they cannot do themselves or they expect the price to come down big time. Of all the posts on this forum of people looking for cars, they always say they prefer something that does not have rust or need metal work. I'll take lots of photos to prove the work was done well and if it's a deal killer, they can go find a different one. Last I checked, they are getting harder to find. I figure a future buyer will be turned off by it needing work or by it having already been done. It wouldn't break my heart to get stuck with two of these awesome cars!

If you document the repairs with pictures,  then it's smart to do those before selling.  Everyone hates bodywork.

With the repairs done, I can see maybe $15k, but hard to tell regarding all other aspects of the car like drive train,  interior,  etc.

Any thought then without repairs? Every RT project i see for sale starts at $10k minimum and those are automatic cars, horrible condition needing big work, without their original power train, etc. I'm a little disappointed that I could make it paint ready with all the mechanicals professionally rebuilt and it only be worth $15k. Maybe I'm better off just restoring the car and selling it finished. Then it's a $45k car.

Here it is today. Despite the front end damage, the hood and fenders are good from another car and it all lines up very well. I had in mind redoing the inner fender panels and radiator support to make it look as though it never happened. Obviously, the rails would need to be carefully checked but from what I can tell, everything is good and straight. Drives good too. What you don't see is that all its missing pieces have been wrapped up and are in my spare room. Most of the items have already been restored and are just waiting to be reinstalled. If I did the repairs I described, the car would be fully assembled and driving. Aside from paint and interior, it would be a very nice car.

Forgot to mention, the rust you see on roof and floorboards is merely surface rust. It comes off very easily. Quarters and drop extensions look beautiful. Only the center area of the trunk pan has rust pitting of significance.

100772. The Vin plate and fender tag are all wrapped up in the baskets with the parts so I don't accidently lose them amongst the parts from the car I'm working on now.  Basically, it is a short tag with very few codes. Go mango paint code, black vinyl top code, black interior bucket seat codes, etc.

Great looking car. I know if I wanted to buy it I would want it just the way it is or like you say with those few problem areas repaired. Please don't primer it anywhere. I know I like to see what I am getting and nothing is better for that than original paint.

Looks good actually.

Get the repairs done,  assemble as much as possible so it can go on a car transport more easily.

Then maybe you can get an Internet sale for what you want.

Tons of pictures always helps the sale.

I think doing any work to it will not really increase the value much. Assembled and driving without paint only makes more work for the next guy having to take it apart for painting. I'm with Sheldon...don't prime anything, just sell it as is. :2cents:

I'm going to guess the date on the tag says 820 give or take a day. my Barracuda (100322) and I know of another /6 Challenger and yours are all built within a couple days of each other at the LA plant. my broadcast sheet was for another /6 Barracuda EW1 exterior/B5 interior (100677). just an interesting side note

I'm surprised Cuda Hunter hasn't asked already: do you mind posting a pic of the fender tag?

Sure. May not be right away though. It's buried with its other parts. Right now, I'm trying to stay focused on fixing the rust areas of my burnt orange Challenger.
