Is there anyone out there that can really make these things perform? Just curious.

You can make them work pretty decent. Download the users manual from Edelbrock.com. Goes in to extensive detail about how to tune them. IMO, they are a great dual purpose/street carb that are easy to tweak once you know how. They may give up some ultimate power to other carbs, but they aren't bad.

I pretty much have done all of that. I have a pair of 1407s on my hemi and I got them pretty close. Just curious if there were guys out there that could really work these over. If it wasn't for trying to keep under my hood looking somewhat stock, I'd put a dominator or a pair of holleys on a tunnel ram in it. I admit, they are kinda fun to play around with these carbs, but I'm just curious if there are guys out there that really dig deep into these things and know what they are doing. As in: telling this said person my set up, boxin' these babies up, and getting them back and make me grin.LOL

Tell us more about the HEMI engine specs. The car itself - weight, auto or manual, converter, gear ratio, etc...  If you have a pretty decent set up, I'm thinking nobody will get you where you want to be with those carbs....    :2cents:

The car is a 72 dodge challenger. Its a 10.5:1 528 inch hemi. MP unported aluminum heads. indy modman intake. comp solid roller 246 @ .050/.600 lift. TTI 2 1/8" headers. 727 with a full manual valve body, billet drum, ultimate 9" 4500 converter that Lenny built. 4.10s in a strange 60. 295/65/15 drag radial. I'm guessing the car to weigh 3800#. its all steel, full interior, with full TTI 3" exhaust. the carbs are 750 cfm and on a progressive linkage. i took the jetting up 1 size on primary and secondary. it seems to work best with the pink step up springs and forgive me but i cant quite remember the rods i have in it LOL! the car went 11.20 @ 119 mph(only has 2 passes on this setup) and i think it will go a little bit faster. even though im pretty happy that it runs this good...

JEEZ that's a monster! You are a lucky man!! The Carter style AFB works well for stock to mildly modified engines, Hemi's included, but your build is way beyond stock to say the least! Tuning parts are limited for these carbs. You may want to research alternative carbs i.e. Holley Ultra XP or similar. Just my opinion  :2cents:

LOL thanks!!! But I think its rather mild :dunno: it idles like a 318.

it runs quite well but I was just curious about these carbs. This is the first time I was ever around these things and didn't really know they had limitations. I think the car will dip into the 10s with this setup. Always had small blocks before. But HEMIS ARE FUN! :bananasmi

The biggest problem is the air bleeds  you should have 10 " of vacuum at idle in gear max but there is now way to alter the air bleeds for low vacuum  you an solder them closed & redrill them to help some but not easy to do .
 the other change would be using the AVS / Thunder series carbs that have an adjustable air door spring ,, this will also make a huge difference , the afb has a counter weighted door  & I always drill a hole in the weight to lighten it & have yet to have a bog on any motor combo so the weight is obviously too heavy  .
 Can I make them work better , Absolutly but not without the motor to tune on , but I am willing to travel !

Thanks!!! The car has 12" at idle in park. I put the .043 nozzles in it also. Helped tremendously. I have the arm in the top hole but never tried backing it off with the big nozzles on my set up. The car doesn't bog but only had a 1.6 60ft. I think a lot of that has to do with the tall tire and 4.10s but its street car. Thank you all for any input and taking the time to help me out or give me ideas. Great site

So Unless you have a very loose converter you have under 10" of vacuum at idle in gear , the first change would be the metering rod springs , thes have to stay down at idel in gear , 4" springs would be the range I would want maybe as high as 6 but no higher /
 You want the least pump shot without a stumble so have more fuel faster is what the biggr squirters are doing but you may be able to get away with less fuel total so moving the are inward should help unless it starts to stumble , the AFB has 3 postions the Holley has 7 cams with 2 positions to tune with by comparison & has approz 12 differnt sizes of squirter too !
