7260 vs 7290
« on: December 27, 2016 - 10:45:30 PM »
Had an 8 3/4 489 center section built and the builder installed a 7260 yoke instead of the requested 7290. This car will be street driven with occasional spirited launches and driving (it's a 4 speed). Mostly stock 383 with a mild cam. Should I switch the yoke or am I OK with the 7260????

Thanks

Should be OK , I would use the conversion joint though so the shaft has 7290 on both ends

I've done 4500 rpm launches with slicks on a prepared track with 7260 u-joints, so they are up to it. I tried to buy the most reputable brand I could find and got them with solid crosses, not drilled for lubrication.  I have broken them, but that typically happened when I got too much lift from the suspension and exceeded their operating angles. Then they grenade in spectacular fashion.

That was the plan.....the shaft has a 7290 in the back now. I didn't check what size the front was.

Thanks all for the info.... :ylsuper:

My 340 Challenger driveshaft was 7260 in the front and 7290 in the back from the factory so you won't be any weaker than that anyway.
