I still feel badly about a situation that happened with my late father around 4 years ago. He'd been driving Dodge Caravans for a number of years, since 86 or 87 actually, and his latest one was getting a little long in the tooth and he wanted to replace it. He apparently was having a bit of "old life crisis" and was toying with the idea of getting a "muscle car" instead of another van. And he liked the new Challengers, which was cool.
I bought a B5 Challenger classic R/T new in '09. It is garage kept, not driven winters, and I don't drive it if there is a good chance of rain. Also, if I stop at a store or drive it to work, I park away from other cars. To this day no dings or scratches other than a chip or 2 on the front bumper from road rash. It's my second car, and yes I baby it! It has just under 25,000 miles now, I drive it around 3000 miles a year in nice weather, mostly on weekends.
So one day my dad asks me if he can borrow it for a few days to try it out for size, see how it fit with his daily driving around. He was involved in many clubs, he had around 3 weekly lunches with different groups of retirees, went to the post office most days to check his PO box and then stop at Mickey Ds for his senior citizen discount coffee etc. And my mom and dads house had a small 1 car garage they kept everything but a car in.
I would have let him take it out for a drive, but I wasn't going to allow anyone to be driving around parking in lots where it might get dinged or scratched, driven in rain, maybe spilling coffee in it, or parking outside under trees for several days, in other words, use it in ways I went out of my way to avoid. So I said no, and my dad was mad at me.
He ended up deciding a "muscle car" wasn't practical for him and bought another caravan. And was diagnosed with cancer literally days after buying the van, and passed away soon afterwards. I still think his request to use my car as a daily driver was not reasonable as I don't use it that way, but I feel bad he felt slighted by my not letting him borrow my car.
