71 barracuda steering box
« on: December 30, 2016 - 07:55:47 AM »
We just bought (our first RUNNING mopar) a 71 cuda and I'm sure I'll be dropping plenty of questions on this form. Reading around you guys are molar geniuses. Anyway the power steering box is absolutely pouring steering fluid from the top, right where the steering shaft enters. After reading around it seemed much easier and just about as cheap to buy a new box rather than rebuild. But as I surfed the web I found there is a huge variance in price. One from Oreillys for 108 and others from mopar sites for 400 to 600. Any suggestions on the boxes? I don't wanna buy the cheapest but I can't afford 600 bones right now and want my dad to be able to drive the car soon. Thanks

If it's just leaking at the input shaft you can replace the seal without pulling the box and drive it now.

On a mopar box you only have to pull the top seal. just pry it out as in the video and replace with a deep socket to drive it in. The hard part is driving out the roll pin to disconnect the steering column shaft from the input shaft.
