TKO 600 - 5 Speed and 2,76 Gears

Hello everybody,

after rebuilt our Cuda 440 with a Tremec 5 Speed, we need to change the axle from Dana 60 ( 4.10) to a 8 3/4 8 ( suregrip and 2.76).

a friend sell us his axle, so we have buy them.

4.10 are the right gears for a dragstrip but not for german Autobahn.  :D

The engine is mild tuned, nearly stock.

Is anyone drive this combination with 5 Speed and this long gear ratio?

is that easy to drive or much toooooo long?

Why would you change from a Dana to an 8 3/4?  Seems backwards to what so many guys want.  The 2.76 gears basically make the 5th gear useless.  You would be better off with a much lower gear.

we change because , make a dana longer is not so easy as a 8 3/4.

our cruising speed in Germany is 90 mph, but often we drive faster, 120 mph. With a 4.10 dana the engine rpm is to high to get longer distance.

@dfrazz : what do you mean with lower gear? 3,23 / 2.91?

I agree, you will probably be happier on the freeway with 3:55 gears in fifth. Your rpm's in fifth will be super low with 2.76. Unless you have built your engine with a cam that produces tons of torque at super low rpm's, it will bog out and you will find your driving in fourth gear. You need diesel like torque with diesel like powerband.

I put a five speed in another car with 3:55 and the rpm's were around 2000. Even that was just a little too low for the cam in the small V8 so I eventually switched to 3:73. I'm guessing you will be a lot happier with 3:55, I would not go taller than 3:23 and even then that's too tall.

On another note, you're the fourth person in Germany I have heard of who pulled their Dana and switched it for an 8.75 axle. The Dana is better. The advantage of the 8.75 is quick gear ratio changes. Once you find the gear ratio you like, you may never change it again.

A 26" tire with a trans ratio of .7 and a 2.76 rear and a 100mph cruise speed you would be at about 2500 rpm.

I think you will have to do more than change the rear gear to make the cuda a comfortable car to cruise with at those speeds though. Might want to look at suspension upgrades as well.

As well, I agree with everyone else that the Dana is the way to go even though you are limited to 3.55 to 4.xx gearsets. You can get a ring and pinion made but that can be a hassle.

With a fifth gear of .76 and a final drive ratio of 4.10 you are effectively at 3.11 final drive. So maybe tell us what rpm's are you trying to achieve at what speed? You might not get exactly what you want but you may get close.

May not be a popular opinion, but IMO, unless you have sticky tires, and regularly launch very hard, the dana is a waste of $ and horsepower.

I have the SAME exact tranny and rear end, but with 15" tires. 

I RARELY use 5 gear unless I am at 80 mph or faster.  At 80mph my tach reads right about 2200 rpms.  And the gear ratios between 1,2 will give you the get up and go you are looking for   (Not sure about the tire size though you plan to run)

But the real issue here is how fast do you plan to drive? 

Frankly, these cars were not designed for prolonged driving at 100 mph or faster.  It will be a somewhat uncomfortable, and possibly somewhat dangerous

Regardless.,you will like the tranny/rear comb

This kinda reminds me of the Peter K. SuperCuda but as I stated before I agreed that there would have to be some serious suspension work and nice brake setup to pull this off.

Stock 383 and I have a tremec with a 3:55. 2,100 +/- rpm is about 70mph with 15" wheels for me. I don't remember tire size but their the standard size.

let me explain you, why we make this rebuilt:

the 4.10 with this Transmission is so short that you feel like drive an automatic, on Highway, overlandstreet´s,sometimes city we drive  in 5 gear.

gear 1-3 you can only use to start, 4 gear is perfect for  City driving but not more.

so we like more a feeling  you have a circletrack car. using the gears completed with the hole band of rpm.

but when you say the 5 gear is useless with 2,76 so we Need maybe a 2,91

with the .64 fifth gear, I think you would probably want a 3.55 rear for autobahn duty. You can buy those for your dana.
