Exhaust Quandry
« on: January 04, 2017 - 04:06:12 PM »
I recently purchased a set of Flowmaster Super 40's for my 70 E-Body/ 440/ HP Manifolds.
They were installed where the factory mufflers/ resonators would go- just in front of the rear end. They BARELY fit.
I'm in the process of having the down, main and exhaust pipes re-done and one idea would be to relocate the Flowmasters just before the tips (where the OEM resonators would go on each side of the tank). I know this will make it somewhat quieter, but I'm OK with that.
I want to add an X-pipe, which is what is forcing this issue and can't afford to buy another set of mufflers, so my questions are:

1. Will the Super 40's fit- keeping the OEM heat shields in place
2. Has anyone done an X-Pipe on this car?
3. What's a fair estimate for doing this I should expect from an exhaust shop?

Thanks-

the resonators are under rear and mufflers by tank. there is less room by the tank

I got that.
But, that being said, will they fit? And what about doing an X-Pipe?

I run a complete TTI exhaust system on my Challenger with a "X" pipe. No problems fitting the car. I also have a "H" pipe that I can swap out if necessary. As for the mufflers fitting next to the fuel tank, 30+ years ago I had the factory exhaust with manifolds and eliminated the resonators under the rear seat and had Thrush turbo mufflers mounted side wise nest to the fuel tank with the turn downs inserted into the muffler outlet. They fit fine although I don't believe the amount of noise will be any different based upon where you mount the muffler.

I put a pair of Magnaflow 6x6 race mufflers either side of the tank just to take the edge off the exhaust, these are 6" long x 6" round and straight through but they just nock edge off
