headlights

1973 challenger, and when I pulled out of storage the head lights all worked, but now they seem to work when they want to unless you have it on high beam than it is fine.  any ideas?   thank you in advanced

Most likely grounds.

Well if you have high beams on all 4 headlamps then your grounds are good.


If not check the grounds for those lamps...


If all 4 light in the high beam position then you need to check the high beam switch on the drivers floor .  You can dissconnect it and jump the  violet to the green  , then turn on the headlight switch if  the low beams light then your floor switch is bad.

If they still dont light   You will have to chase the violet wires out to the  headlights .

You can also disconnect the headlight connector at the  drivers headlight and see if you have 12vdc from violet to chassis ground when headlight switch is on and floor switch is in the low position

Im guessing floor switch .  Or bad connection at the first headlight , corroded etc......


The lowbeam circuit goes from the headlight switch to the floor switch then to the firwall bulkhead fitting to the drivers outside headlight so fairly simple to chase

I think I bought a floor high beam switch at NAPA .

i pulled the floor switch off and jumped the wires, it seem that the switch is the problem,  got a new one on order.   Thanks

The 70 Cuda front end lighting is one of the last posts.  The interior wiring is similar between the Cuda and Challenger.

Do your turn signals work? Those share a common ground with the head lights.

  Check power (red and purple wires) to the head lights  and make sure grounds are solid, inspect both switches (main and floor) for proper operation, and the bulkhead connections.

Thanks for the help, i'm a real newbie to all this (no prior experience).

So I believe the wiring has to be off. The turn signal only works for the left side, but if i put the emergency lights on or the fog lights, than both will work. When I put the right turn signal on, it makes noise but no light comes on.

It seems like no power is making its way to the head lights either.

Probe the Green wire going into the floor dimmer switch with the headlight in the on position.   That is the hot wire feeding the headlights from your switch. 

No power there, you know the power issue is before that point.

Your foglights are on a separate circuit.
