I think that is 69-70. 71's have a nipple with hose to a breather on passenger valve cover.

The "why" I will leave to others.

The bowl vent was there for to meet the primitive evaporative emissions requirement of the time.

Okay, thanks.

My center carb bowl is bad, and i need to replace it. Should  A normal bowl work without that extra hole and lever?

The bowl will have to be able to accommodate the accelerator pump in the bottom. Outboard carb bowls won't work because of this. So if you find a correct replacement bowl it will most likely a have vent provision.

I agree, I'm looking around for a 2300 carb body to confirm, but i believe if you have a standard Holley 4150 float bowl w/ an acellerator pump you should be ok.

you can use an outboard bowl if it has the 4 bolt flange for the accelerator pump. You would have to drill the orifice and install a check ball.

It looks like that one should work. It list as a bowl for a primary 2300 carb.
