Leaf spring twist
« on: January 18, 2017 - 10:37:06 AM »
I installed a b-body rear end and have a twist in my springs. Would a relocation kit fix this? Offset shackles maybe?

Did you relocate the spring perches before installing the B-body rear end?  The perch widths are different between B and E-bodies.  The perches need to be 46" center to center to fit an E-body.  What are your at right now?

Spring perch widths (center-to-center)

A BODY
'66-73= 43"

B BODY
'62-'70= 44"
'71-'74= 47.3"

C BODY
'65-'73= 46"

E BODY
'70-'74= 46"

No, the perches weren't relocated yet, just put on to move the car out of the garage to repair another vehicle and now that the cold weather is gone I was gonna get her ready for this year

Have the perches moved to 46" centers and your good to go.  Dr Diff sells factory style perches.  Others probably do as well.  Otherwise you'll have to use a generic perch.  The original ones are probably not worth trying to reuse.

Okay, thanks! What's the widest wheel size I can run with original perch sizes?

Do a search.  I think there were some posts recently that talked about max tire/wheel size.  Dr Diff also sells an offset hanger kit.  You might as well put one of those on while you're at it.  You have to put new perches on anyway.  Now is the time to do it.

If your installing offset hangers you leave the spring perches on the B body housing alone... Bring the spring to the perch not the perch to the spring....

Can't remember the rim offset hopefully I wrote it down, I'll see if I can find it. The tires are P295 50 15, they are on a wide rally rim.

He didn't say what B-body housing he has.  If he has a 71+, he'll have to move the perches.

It's out of a 1967 belvedere with 3.55 gears. I'll probably go with the offset hangers, right now it's got 15x10 slots in the rear but the backspacing isn't quite right for me.

'67 B-body perches are at 44" center to center, I'm surprised you were able to get the springs mounted on that at all. Horrible idea.

A 1" offset kit from Dr. Diff would be your only bolt in solution, otherwise you'll have to cut and weld the perches. As far as tire size, it should go without saying that you'll be able to run another 1" of rubber per side with the offset kit. Without it you can run 275's with no modifications, some cars can do a little better than that but it depends on how you set up the backspacing.
