Convert from drum to disk brakes
« on: January 22, 2017 - 05:55:35 PM »
I am wanting to change my car from factor drum brakes to factor disk brakes.
I have a 1971 cuda with 11" drum on the front and I was wondering what it would
Take to convert to manual disk on the front.  Any input would be appreciated.  Thanks

Have you seen these kits? There's a stage 3 & 4 kits also. My car was already done so I don't have experience with these.

I bought one of the front disc conversion kits from Right Stuff primarily because of the relatively low cost.  I don't have any road experience with it yet, but so far the installation has been pretty straightforward.   From what I can tell, most of these conversion kits require at least a 15" minimum wheel diameter.   Depending on whether your car has power brakes or not, you may need a power brake booster too.

One option I came across recently:

http://ssbrakes.com/i-10092523-mopar-b-and-e-body-front-4-piston-power-disc-brake-conversion-kit-a156-1.html

This is described as fitting "most" 14 inch wheels using the drum spindles, but you'd need to check with them.   I don't remember seeing this kit when I was looking a couple of years ago, because if it fits 14's I could have avoided the wheel and tire upgrade I have ahead of me now.

There are LOTS of other options available if you want to spend the $$$.

The kit I bought from CPP via Classic Industries had the small standard rotors with slider calipers and fit inside my 14" Road Wheels (magnum 500). I since put the 11.75" Cordorba rotors on, still with the same slider calipers but larger adapters, and had to go with 15" rims.  This kit used A Body spindles.

Would the stage 1 ( 10.75 manual disk ) from dr diff be much
Of an up grade over front drum brakes.  I could go to stage 2
Set up but I would need to up grade to 15" wheels.  Any thoughts.

Well it depends on what your doing with the car...spirited street, auto x, racing etc.

I think discs are better than drums. I originally used the standard rotors you mentioned and the car stopped good.  I upgraded to 11.75" rotors simply because I wanted to and they provided a slightly larger radius for a little better stopping.

There's a lot of high $$$ kits out there, but for a cruiser I think the standard rotors work pretty good.  Remember a lot of the manual brake pedal feel is a personal thing so you can match master cylinder bore to what you like.

A lot of mopar guys at the local cruise-ins by me still use drums and like them.  Overall, I prefer discs over drums.

Hopefully, some of the other guys can give you some good suggestions and other alternatives that they tried and found to be successful.
