Use sound deadening on the trans hump mounting surfaces. My lid always rattled. Not any more. Also has the inside of your lid separated? The stand offs usually break. I have an auto so I am stuck with a console.

Mine came with a console and I actually like them.
It's really up to personal tastes.

I've always liked the look of them, personally. Yeah, it's cheap-o plastic, but it's very unique to these cars. The wood-grain plate alone is pretty BA
That and it gives me a place to rest my arm and a little bit of storage. :-)
