Center Console or Not
« on: February 02, 2017 - 04:59:10 PM »
My Cuda 440-6 manual transmission has no center console.
Was the console an option? Should I put the console? Is it just a matter of tastes?

Taste ... no console looks more All Business ...
The console makes more noise so if it's not part of your plan or a restoration element I say leave it out... :2cents:

I always liked the look of them but to be honest they are pretty useless. I have one in my Challenger (AT) which is cool but will not have one in my Cuda (converted to 4 spd) although it originally had one for the AT.

From a coffee drinker you always have to have a cup holder.
This is my temporary console. Put it in when driving remove when showing. Not mounted. It just tucks between seats. From a 4wd Dakota. Not sure what year though.

:iagree:
I have one in mine because I like the look. It's no good for setting a coffee down-it will end up on the floor. It does a good job of holding an ash tray in place for the people in the back seat....but I don't let people smoke in my car...So all in all, pretty useless.

The pistol grip shifter all by itself is just awesome.  Don't hide and clutter it up with a console.  Plus my rattles and vibrates, can't wait to get rid of it.

I wonder if putting in patches of dynamat or equivalent on the console base and top interior surfaces would dampen the noise, squeaks, etc.  Presuming you decide to keep it.

It wouldn't hurt but a lot of noise comes from the console moving around where it is mounted during shifting and the boot rubbing on it. In some cases the shifter handle hits the console or pushes the boot against the console in 2nd and 4th. I am sure if you spent enough time adjusting it and working with it you could minimize the effects to a degree.

OEM console is so dang cheap looking...leave it out.  The interior has enough plastic.

Go w/o:

'71 383-auto 'Cuda 'vert (sold)

My car came with the console and was originally an AT car. I changed it over to a 4 speed and left the console off at first. I just couldn't get used to not having the console but a stock console rattles like hell. So I took the console and lined the backside of all the surfaces with the same sound deadening material I used for the interior. What a huge difference it made! Solid as a rock. And I personally think the interior looks better with the console. Just my two cents.

I prefer them without that cheap console as well. My last two four speed cars had them though.
