Door ajar switch for SE challenger
« on: February 03, 2017 - 10:33:42 PM »
I have a 70 JS29 car and have read about a second door open switch used as "door ajar" indicator on the overhead console. Where is it located? I only see one switch on the jamb at the front of the door. A pic would be great.
Thanks
John

Thanks RT my jambs do not have a hole there. My lower quarters were replaced in the past sometime. The jambs look like they have always been with the car. Did they all have this second switch? Mine is a June 70 build.

So what happened to Mine? I will pull the interior rear panels off to get a better look at the backside of my door jambs. I really don't think they were replaced or welded shut but I have seen stranger things.

Kind of like the surprise I had when finding the car did not come from the factory with a radio. Then found a guy on this forum with an SE as well as a guy with a very original SE in town did not have a radio either.
Thanks,
John

Have you checked the body stampings? Wouldn't be the first time a car was rebooted years ago & clues showed up years later.... Or someone didn't know what the switches were there for, figured someone added them (probably for an alarm) & welded the holes shut.... Whatever the case moving forward you need them for the door ajar light so add them...

I don't think it was rebodied though I have not checked stamping so. Before purchasing I did spend considerable time under the car and inside when the interior was mostly removed. I looked at spot welds, paint overspray. I did not see anything that the previous owner did not mention. Have not seen anything funny inside body cavities seems trunk underwood etc. the work on the car was done in the early to mid 90's. Have some picks as well as report from shop doing work. Will take a closer look at the backside of the door jambs. They were repainted. It may be they were welded shut thinking they were fore an alarm. They would be good for that use as well as the da light.
I'll let you all know what I find.

RT I think you were right. They were filled in. I think they did not realize that they were suppose to be there.
I am glad this site is here. It is very helpful for things like  this, thank you all

I found pics of origional switches. It looks like part of an origional switch was welded in place then ground off. Evidently no repops exist so will try to find similar switches from a Chevy Astro van as a sub.
Another one of those parts where zillions went to the scrap yard and now a handful are in existence in nos collections and a few cars.

Back when I had my R/T SE i used regular pin switches that I bent the connector 90 degrees on....
