TDC, Distributor Gear an Distributor Installation Question
« on: February 06, 2017 - 11:36:45 AM »
Hi Guys,

I'm trying to install my distributor on my 340 and I have been going through the following steps below but I'm having no luck.  The engine is out of the car and I don't have the intake on so I can see everything.  Can someone give me a little direction?  Thanks

1. I'm locating TDC with putting my finger over the #1 cylinder hole and getting the puff of air.
2. Then I set it to 12 degrees prior to TDC like I was told.
3. I drop in the distributor Gear where the slot is facing the #1 intake bolt.
4. Then I drop in the distributor (I'm using a Pertronix Flame Thrower Bullet Distributor) and I can't get the rotor to line up with the #1 cylinder/plug.  It's going to the other side facing the # 2 cylinder.  I tried it with my old Mopar distributor with the same results.

What am I doing wrong?  The only thing I can think of is pulling out the distributor gear and orientating it so I can install the distributor to the #1 sparkplug.

Your thought are greatly appreciated.

Dave

Facing #2 is correct.... Put the #1 wire there & complete the firing order....

if set a 12 BTDC, then your rotor will not point to#1 cyclinder.

It was pointing to #2 cylinder.  Does that sound about right?

Sorry to be a pain about all of this,  It's just that I want to work all of this out while the engine is out of the car on the stand.  I'm ready to install it and want to make sure I have everything all set before I put it in.

all you need to do is make sure that the rotor points to a terminal (any terminal) on the cap. really makes no difference which terminal. that will be where you install the #1 wire, and then run the rest of the wires in the correct order. Having said all of that it does help with wire routing if it is set up close to the diagram above. that way you are not criss crossing wires as you route them to the plugs. easy peasy.

Yes that is right. Look at the diagram 1 Wild R/T has posted, and start your firing order from there.  1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 in distributor rotation. If you have trouble just post back.
