22" Rad. Support Aluminum Radiator suggestions...
« on: June 28, 2005 - 04:07:32 PM »
Hey there, i have a dinky 18" radiator in my 'cuda. The stock (except headers) gets around 210° in the 100° heat of vegas...and i plan on changing the heads, cam and intake...so its just BOUND to get hotter. Which is NO good

I've been researching a few different radiators. I've come up with this and im looking for suggestions/comments, etc...

Radiator
This is a Griffin 24"L x 19"H Ford/Mopar radiator. (24" beign the overall length)

Mounting
These are Be-Cool mounting brackets for Chryslers with 22" radiator openings. These are welded to the radiator...

Of course i will need to add a external tranny cooler.

Now, the 24" radiator should fill the 22" opening well revieling most of the core. The ends of the radiator will come almost to the stock mounting holes, from there the Be-Cool brackets will be welded and will be bolted to new holes that will need to be drilled.

This radiator is about 1/4" thicker than my current radiator. Right now, i have 1 full inch between the radiator and fan-clutch so i will have 3/4" or so room to allow for differences in the mounting that may push the radiator out some and still use my current fan.

Anyone think of a reason why i should not go this route PLEASE let me know..

Thanks

Mike,
I'm not going to pick on your choice. I'm just totally stunned you have an 18" in there now.  :o :o :o :eekbig: :eekbig: :eekbig:  My only question is this after-market radiator has 2 cores, when the real thing could have 3 or 4. Now, I'm NO expert here, so maybe the new after-market stuff is more efficient than the old stock stuff. Maybe someone else here can fill you in more.

My only question is this after-market radiator has 2 cores, when the real thing could have 3 or 4.

Mike - the aluminum 2 core radiators use a super wide ( usualy 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" ) cores, so that even though it's only 2 core is typicaly wider than the 4 core raidators. The aluminum not only has a better weight difference but also due to the material and wide "core" has a better cooling ratio.

The only reason I know this is I put a Jeg's aluminum radiator in and did a bit of research.

I have the 22" radiator opening. So i needed a radiator that was a little bigger than 22" so i can get the most out of my opening. I went with a $190 Griffin Ford/Mopar 24"x19" radiator and a B&M external tranny cooler. It should be on its way from summit, ill have some brackets welded up, plumb the trans cooler and find a upper hose that will work and fire it up..
