6 cylinder to small or big block conversion.
« on: February 12, 2017 - 07:53:28 PM »
I'm thinking about buying a 6 cyl. barracuda. what modifications would I have to make to the suspension, motor mounts, cross member, rear end etc. Would it be better starting with a V8 car?  Thanks

I understand the K-frame is different between 6 & 8cyl. , & each uses a different transmission & of course the exhaust.

Other minor changes I'd imagine such as heavier torsion bars, probably has the smaller rear end (not a 8 3/4) that you would want to upgrand

I'd say if the /6 is a solid car at a decent value it would be worth doing.. if it's a basket case keep looking.

Just easy bolt on stuff really.  K-members are /6 specific however Schumacher makes conversion mounts. That way you can keep the /6 K-member. Www.Engine-swaps.com

Like Wade said, the /6 uses its own trans so you'll need a 904 or 727 from a V8. Torsion bars will most likely be really small however most use larger then factory bars any more. You can find a variety of different sizes on the market.  It may or may not have an 8 3/4 rear. You'll need to find the right length driveshaft or just have one made/shortened.

Sounds like it may be more trouble than its worth. I'll have to think about this.  Thanks

Mine was originally a /6 car. Changed the k-frame ( $150) and found an 8 3/4 rear end , the rest you will change anyhow if you want it to handle and brake. Chances are the motor mounts, torsion bars, etc will need replacing anyhow. Transmission changes small block to big block so you need to decide what you want.

I checked the Schumacher sight last night and don't see any /6 to v8 conversion mounts listed.  I know they used to make them.  Did they discontinue those?

x2. If its solid, its a much better starting point than a basket case V8.

Agreed.  You're just buying a starting point....a base to build from.  /6 or V8, it doesn't matter as long as the foundation is solid.

Thanks your advice is encouraging. The body is in good shape, the interior needs work.

What I found appealing about a /6 car is I figured it was likely never beat on like a drag car or twisted up with ungodly amounts of torque. They likely lead a more " gentle"  life....

If you don't want it I'll take it. I'd even keep it a 6 cyl. Dare to be different!
