Air Cleaner Help!!!
« on: March 12, 2017 - 07:52:34 PM »
 :clueless: :clueless: :clueless: :clueless:

Need help gents.

I'm looking into air cleaners but I have  significant problem.  I have a 383 magnum in a 71 Challenger RT.  I went with an M1 single plane intake and the room between the carb and hood is minimal.  I am going to have to cut some cardboard or other material and put it on the carb to get exact space available.

For those of you running this combo what air cleaner did you go with?  14" drop plate setup, Holley side draft setup, edelbrock low profile....

Go grab you wires roll of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil, loosely wad up a 6" ball put it on top of the carb, close the hood..... Now you know how much room you have..

playdough lets you use pretty colors.

to make room under hood, I cut out hood cross beam.

Also, you can modify lip of lower air filter pan/base.

to use a spacer to limit heat transfer, I milled 3/8 inch off top of intake.

Also made indent in pan to clear throttle linkage

just got to get creative.

 Hmmm Play doh :naughty:

I was looking at the 14" drop pans.  Think I'll do the play doh trick and go from there on modifying the bottom pan!!

careful on the drop pans, as they move the lid towards the carb inlet,
and may interfere with airflow to the carb.

If the radiator and grill is out of the car, you can look through that opening and see how much room you have to work with.  If you get lucky, the air cleaner might clear the under hood reinforcements which will gain you some clearance.

Use the deepest drop base that you can get away with.   An Edelbrock carb with electric choke is limited to a 3/4" drop base.  You can get a 1" drop to work with a little surgery to the base.  You'll probably be able to go deeper with a Holley carb.  Once you have the base figured out, you can adjust the lid height with the air filter thickness.  Get the lid as close to the hood as possible while leaving a little room for engine movement.

Maximizing your drop base AND getting the lid as close to the hood as possible will let you run the tallest filter.  Thin filters look goofy.  :2cents:

Don't forget about the carb stud/wing nut height.  For my project, I'm going to make a custom hold down fastener that is actually lower then the top of the lid. This will let me get even closer to the hood and maximize the air filter height.

How tall is the M-1 Single plane? I'm running a Performer RPM which is a relatively tall manifold, I've run a Holley & an Edelbrock both with the stock dual snorkel air cleaner.... I have a hard time believing he needs more than a 3/4" drop base if that.....  :2cents:

Thanks for the insight fellas.

The Radiator is in but the rest of the front clip is still off.  I don't have a good view of the clearance but I do have a partial view...pretty tight.

I am running a holley and It looks like I can get about 1 1/2" drop without too much surgery.  Time to start playin
