Restore/ Repair a Charcoal Canister?
« on: March 24, 2017 - 06:03:33 PM »
I have this charcoal canister and I'm guessing something is missing from the bottom?
The chamber is completely empty and there are 2 metal discs inside.

It looks sealed, any way to make this usable?

Could probably use activated charcoal in it, but why? I don't think your '70 had one? No advantage to using it other than originality for a different year.  :2cents:

I'm converting to FiTech fuel injection and want to add the later model years ECS system to take advantage of the closed system and get rid of the annoying problem of constantly dealing with the gas fumes.

With EFI there shouldn't be any engine bay gas fumes and if you're talking about the tank, then why not just use the early vented system?  :2cents:

70 vent is just an open line, fumes fill the garage every time I come home.
Later style uses this canister.  EFI or not, tank needs a vent.

You can buy activated charcoal from fish/aquarium stores. There must be a way to pop that open in a non-destructive manner and put a small layer of some kind of porous air filter at the bottom then charcoal on top? Have the charcoal in a cloth bag of some sort?
I seem to remember someone refilling one of these during one of their projects. Burdar comes to mind, but I'm not sure. Try PMing him.

Found the thread, couple of questions

- I guess you have cut off the bottom then glue back
- Where do the 2 metal plates go and how are they secured?

I would guess, small screen on top, fill with charcoal, large screen, glued on bottom, then I've seen the replaceable filter on bottom, although you put it inside?

You guessed right.  I didn't do the replaceable filter on the bottom though, as you said, it's inside.  Not sure how it would secure if it was on the outside.

And I cut it open because in the research I did these units are not serviceable- they were replaced.  So only option was to cut it open and re-seal.  So far so good.

Good info,

How did you cut it open?
What did you use to glue it back?
How much charcoal is needed to refill?  Several options on Amazon

Thx

Hey, drilled a couple holes to get a saw blade in and used an air tool, reciprocal saw. Think I used a 3m adhesive, but think any high quality glue could work. I went to the local pet store to get the filter and charcoal materials, can't remember how big the jug was but went to the store with an idea of the volume I needed and bought a little extra - sorry can't help more with that.
