Challenger filler neck
« on: March 27, 2017 - 12:51:30 AM »
I am installing a new gas tank and followed the FSM to mount tank first. I then lubricate the grommet and try to install the filler neck but having a hell of difficult time. The filler neck is too long and can't line up with the correct angle. Forcing it and twisting torn the brand new grommet. What is the right way to do this? Is this a two persons job? Need to order another grommet first.

I assume you have Challenger and not Cuda...if so, I did one of these in a 70 Charger which seems similar and what I did was barely hang tank but left it loose. Played around with it for a long time and eventually was able to bring up the tank little by little. Haven't done my Challenger yet so not certain if it will work the same. I recall putting some sort of lubricant on the grommet so the tube could slide as needed.

Wild RT is right. It is easier to insert the tube first. The key is to line up the angle right. I finally got it in with the help from my bother in law. It is really a two men job. One hold the tank and line up the tube and one twist and push from the top.

I use silicone lube to insert the neck into the tank, I push it in just a bit far. Then I raise the tank up, insert a jack and block of wood under the tank to hold it up and hook the straps and j-bolts. Make sure the tank is lined up, tighten the straps and then I pull and twist (if necessary) the filler tube into the opening. I think I have done it without pulling the tank about 30 years ago but I wouldn't recommend it and the damaged grommet is going to happen from over angling it.
