Shaker to hood clearance ?
« on: April 23, 2017 - 09:32:26 AM »
How do you determine the proper distance from the shaker seal to the hood and get proper seal without hurting the carb or hood by having it too close ? I have a 440 base plate which has a different drop than a 383 base plate so I can't use the front support. I don't know what the difference is between the two so that I could use that for a guide.

My drivers compartment gets hot and I've finally realized that the heat is coming from the shaker opening allowing heat from the engine compartment to get to the hood vents by the window. Yesterday I happen to stick my hand outside and felt hot air when the temps were in the 50's. I've had carpet out to lay dynamat and reflextic, had the heater and vent boxes out to redo seals, wrapped exhaust pipe under drivers area to insulate heat away from floorboards and now I find that the damn shaker isn't sealing like I thought it was and thats been the problem the whole frikkin time !!!   :banghead:

I am almost certain that the difference in height between the 383 and the 440 is 1/2."

You could close a piece of paper in between the shaker seal and hood then try pulling it out.  Too tight and the paper will rip.  Too loose and the paper has no resistance.  Should take a good pull to remove it.  This is how I do door weatherstripping and it works well

Make sure the seal at the hood to firewall is tight. If the hood is not sitting down on the seal it will let hot air in through the vents. Also most cars that I have seen will have a seal problem right above the the wiper motor which will affect the drivers air vent. Make sure your steering column seal is working, you will get a lot of heat on the drivers side also.

Do you have this front support, I have been looking for that one now for three years, can you give me the measurement so I can fabricate one?
