Broken exhaust manifold stud
« on: May 06, 2017 - 02:53:03 PM »

Took a drive to Smileys Racing to buy 5 gallons of VP 110 leaded. Adjusted the idle, checked timing , it's at 12 btdc , then tried to reduce exhaust manifold leak and decided to snap one of the studs.
Still has the original turquoise paint on the bolt.

It turned very easy, so it was probably going to let go soon.
Now it matches the starter bolt threads in the bell housing that are stripped.
40 year old engine will do that.

I have had that happen on the drivers side rear bolt, just broke off with no torque.

I recently replaced the header with the exhaust manifold and maybe it's possible that with the heating and the cooling and the different expansion rates of cast iron and steel tubing the stud stretched it a little bit because it was fine a month or so ago when I last checked .
This stud was drivers side second from front.

Been there several times. Used the wick method with paraffin to remove snapped exhaust manifold bolts.

Thanks, I need to do some work on this , will try the parrafin first and have the welder ready to go also.
Thinking of getting new set of studs installed all around while doing this repair.
