Holley 670 streetavenger
« on: May 07, 2017 - 05:18:18 PM »
Hey guys, got some questions about this carb and never tuned one before. This is on a 318 with offenhauser 360 intake, headers, not sure on heads, and some sort of cam as it has a decent lope to it. The car starts great with 2 pumps when cold, electric choke has voltage but does not move when cold. Once warmed up, it is a bear to start and you need to hold throttle WFO for about 5 seconds of cranking. At idle it is super rich so I leaned the mixture screws about 3/4 turn, car still run good. Can't see the float height while running on the secondary, so I tried adjusting it up some, about 1 turn and now it starts immediately when warm, but still can't see float level. Car seems too idle smother after float adjustment also.  Someone please help me understand what I'm doing

I was hoping someone else would offer to help you, because I'm not really going to help but let you know my setup I had and what I liked about the SA carb.
This was on my recent 289 Ford Mustang bored over .030 with lots of HP goodies and an Edelbrock RPM manifold.  I had a 670 Street Avenger on this car and I loved it!  That carb loved my engine too.  Street Avengers are made basically made to "fit and go" right out of the box.  You shouldn't have had to adjust much at all.  The one big difference was I had a manual choke.  I was sick of crappy electric chokes and issues they brought....just like you have now.  My manual choke was super easy to set on/off and I never had an issue ever in 8 years of owning that carb on my car.  You might consider a manual choke and your troubles may go away, once you set the carb back to factory settings, or close.
Sorry I couldn't offer better help.

Does your choke open if you leave the keyswitch on for a minute or two? The choke element may have power, but is it getting hot and opening the choke?

You will have to get the choke working first or leave it wide open , if the problem persists the heat from the intake good be boiling the fuel & flooding the engine so you may needa Coolcarb spacer to keep the carb  cool

:iagree: Something is wrong with the choke system. Check the electric heater wire(s). There must be a ground connection as well as a "hot on ignition" wire. Personally, I don't like electric chokes for several reasons, preferring a manual pull cable, but that's just me.
