smooth move
« on: May 07, 2017 - 07:14:28 PM »
I purposely let my gas tank get low because I thought I was going to do some fuel system work over the winter.  It didn't happen.  Saturday I fired up my car for the first time of the season.  I decided to take my chance on driving to the gas station 5 miles away.  I would have needed 1 gallon of gas to get there safely.  I only made it 3/4 of a mile when it starved and died going up hill.  I made it to the top, but knew I wasn't going anywhere.  So I gave my neighbor a call to bring me some gas to make it back home.  I now know that a usual gas can can barely fill my 'Cuda because of the fill location and I couldn't lift my license plate any higher to let the can dump hardly any fuel in.  I may start carrying a long funnel just in case I dork it up again.  With the miserable gas milage I get, running out of gas on the road may still be a possibility!!

ive never ran out of gas before when driving and i certainly dont take chances with these things that get 8 miles to the gallon.  the quarter line mark is like the E mark for me.  Bummer about not getting to your fuel system work.  hopefully you can still enjoy the car over the season

I hoped I had one gallon to get to the gas station.  I was way off the mark on that guess.  The car runs fine.  I was hoping to get a new FI system put on, but I decided to buy a big dirt bike and a big snowmobile instead.  Next year I hope to be fuel injected since I don't have any more new toys to upgrade.  And this year I will trust my gas gauge a little bit more.

It's never fun to run out of gas but at least you were able to get back on the road again quickly.  As a desert rat I wouldn't know what to do with a snowmobile but it sounds like it would make the snow more bearable!

I actually made an uneventful trip to the gas station.  It sure is fun driving my car again!!

Snowmobile is a '15 polaris indy 800.  145hp 450bls 110mph top speed stock.  Plus it is supposed to handle very good too.  Im ready for the off season!!!

Ya know, I started riding sleds back in the 60's when they first came out and still have one, but I've got to say, that 145hp in a sled scares the beejezus out of me and the possibilities for physical disaster seem enormous. At 110mph on snow or ice, you're (as Molly Hatchet's song says) "flirtin' with disaster" and one wrong move may be your last, so please be careful! We don't want to hear that you've done yourself a mischief.

That's one awesome snowmobile.

I have done some work for Chris Burandt, X games gold medalist who did the first back flip.  He has single handed changed the  workings of the new snow mobiles. Polaris took him on and he has R and D'd many of the new styles and suspensions of the polaris.

Anything 2014 and newer feels like my dirt bike.  Now longer feels like a four wheeler.   Totally changed the game.  I'm considering purchasing my first snow mobile since riding the new style.  I just can't even explain how different the new sleds are.  made me a great sled rider pretty quick when riding the new ones.

running out of gas sucks.  Even on a sled.

I got a great deal on this sled post season.  Such a great deal that I had to take a pass on putting fuel injection on my 'Cuda.  I have ridden it about 5 minutes after we got a little dump of snow.  It seems so insane!!  Stupid fast.  And I was able to take a decent jump and stick the landing over and over.  And that was only riding it 5 minutes!!  It is so balanced.  I cannot believe the packaging inside that chassis. The engine is very low and the entire nose in front of the shocks is only exhaust.  I am blown away at the engineering.  I am sooo ready to ride that beast!!

Running out of gas on a snowmobile can be a life or death thing.  I cannot imagine running out of gas in the middle of the woods, with temps in the single digits.  Most of the time I feel lost riding all the curvy wooded trails.  Walking out could take a while.  I don't want to freeze to death because I made that simple mistake.  Most of my snowmobiling is based around the next gas stop.  Like 69ChargerRT said, a quarter take is the empty line.  Now if I can only adapt that thinking to my 'Cuda!!
