Doug's Headers sitting to low. What about TTI?
« on: May 18, 2017 - 07:05:44 PM »
Guys,

I am trying to avoid having to pay for custom built headers if possible. Every quote I got was around $2k. The Doug's I have only a few inches of ground clearance and I am wondering if any of you big block guys have better clearance with TTI or other brands? I have a Magnumforce K-frame so I cannot use the Tri-Y system or shorties because they will not clear, not even with a mini starter. I am looking for headers that will stay high and will allow my exhaust to hug the floor. If I cannot pick up another 2-3 inches than they are not worth changing.

Thanks for all your help.

I appreciate the reply but that would not fit the look of the car. Like the imagination though.

70 Challenger 440 TTI headers. 4" from the collector flange to the ground with a 24 1/8" ride height at the center of the front fender wheel well. I hope this helps.

Certinely does. I believe TTI ground clearance has got to be better than what I have. Thanks!

I'd research around some more. I think the Dougs small block headers are basically the same as TTI small block headers. The big block headers might be the same situation.

Maybe there is someone who can modify the ones you already have. Probably not cheap but should be less expensive than a brand new custom set.

Any long tube header will hang down in that area.
I'd be thinking about some shorties if stock manifolds are a no go.

I have considered shorties but Ken at Magnumforce told me that they were never able to make them work with his k-frame. So this rules out shorties. I looked at a Tri-Y set up but they do not work with my TKO, only auto or 4 speed. Hedman has a set of protouring mid length headers. I just sent them an email to see if they will work with my suspension. Let you guys know what they say. I just do not know how people with low ride height e bodies use long tube headers. Thanks for all your input.

Which set of TTI are you running? I see a few options on their site. The 2 1/8 low deck step headers claim to give the maximum amount of ground clearance.

Do you guys know how much adjustment there might be in the motor mounts? It does not appear that there is much difference between the Doug's and TTI full length headers, so I am not sure if swapping will gain me much ground clearance. Shorties may offer me more clearance but I apparently sacrifice noticeable hp and torque. I am wondering if raising the motor and changing the pinion angle can get me two inches. My exhaust is no where near the floor boards so I am wondering if making some adjustments may give me more ground clearance.

Please share your opinions. Thanks again for all the input.

Your biggest gain would be by raising the back of the transmission, but you probably do not have much to work with there... it changes the angle of the header pipes, tucking them closer to the floorboards...

You could get almost a .75:1 or .8:1 gain with regular length headers, depending on where collectors are in relation to the tranny mount...

That's why I suggested having your existing headers modified. Basically make each header two pieces. Turn them into a big slip tube. Cut the headers in half somewhere in the middle. Expand the tubes on one half so you can slide the other half of the header tubes together. This would raise the collector closer to the floor. Not easy or cheap but would probably be cheaper then custom.

If header tubes were perfectly parallel to each other, that might be possible.

this is a great subject, I would think someone has purchased a set that fit well, I was considering the Dougs until I saw this thread because the ones I have currently the pitman arm hits and doesn't allow a full left turn, also low ground clearance
