What cam to use
« on: May 22, 2017 - 06:44:47 AM »
Hi everybody not sure if this has been asked before as it's my first time on this cool sight , building a 440 engine that's got around 9.5 comp , 906 heads with light porting  , dual plan intake , 850 carb etc nothing crazy but torn between a comp xe 284 flat tappet or a 238 /246 crane cam I have a 4 speed with 3.23 rear and 26.8 tyre , do I need more deeper gears , I have used a xe series before but I had a 3000 conv and 3.7 gears I loved it but it was noisey is that because of the design of the fast ramps , open to other cams as well . Cheers cam

Crane and Comp are modified Chevy grinds IMO. Check these Lunati Voodoo grinds:

or

A 3 bolt style cam is highly recommended. Good Luck!

The 704 Voodoo compression, stall speed and axle ratio specs apply mainly to cars with automatic transmissions, not so much manual trans.  No stall speed , you decide on shift points etc. Valid concern with the Whiplash cam! 107 deg LSA makes for a lot of overlap and low manifold vacuum. It does sound nasty though! I would suggest a cam with 110 deg LSA, around 242 or less duration at .050" and no more than .510" lift with stock rocker arms. You should have decent drivabilty with this set up IMO. You can also contact Lunati Tech and get a recommendation.  :2thumbs:

242 duration seems high for his combo?

thanks both of you  for your imput hey , ill fill that form out and ask the question id say they would recomed what you just did with those cams I got a custom grind sheet from crow cams they said go with 238/246 at 50 , with 109 lobe centre  and 4862 intake and 4905 exh with 1.5 stock rockers , should sound nice with the 109 lobe and under 500 lift is safe hey and make good midrange power , whats your thoughts on this custom grind , pretty close to what your both advising

That custom grind should work nicely. 109 LSA will give you the lope you want (I know, it sounds cool!!) without sacrificing too much manifold vacuum (IMO) and drivability. Talk to Lunati Tech before you make a choice, and take advantage of that large lifter bore in your Mopar!

It is pushing a bit it IMO. I'm thinking with a four speed manual, you can get away with a little more cam then us automatic guys. Seems to have worked in the past. :2thumbs:
