torsion bars and front disc conversion question
« on: May 24, 2017 - 05:42:16 PM »
I'm still at this restoration (read: just trying to get this '67 cuda off the jack stands) and i'm about to start putting the parts back on the front suspension (changed out the tie rod bushings and such) and do this drum to disc conversion. My question is pretty simple, i think, for those in the know, and i've asked a lot about torsion bars and gotten great advice...
My front suspension is apart basically from the outside in to the idler arms...as i put it all back together, at what point do i begin tightening the torsion bar?
Thanks for the help!

You can tighten them up some at any time but you won't know how much to adjust them until all the weight is on and sitting on the ground.

ah! Thank you. I knew it had to be on the ground to adjust the height, eventually, but i wasn't sure if they needed to be kept loose as the spindles and rotors and other bits and pieces were being put back on.
that helps! thanks.

Leave the lower control arm shaft mounting nuts loose until you are sitting on the ground, so you don't wreck them by twisting too much when you set it down the first time...

I tighten the adjuster damn near last.... If your running standard torsion bars I wiggle the adjuster assembly as I seat the adjusting bolt, when the slop is gone I consider that zero... From there 20 full turns is a good place to start.....   Set it down, roll the car a few feet to settle the suspension & check your measurement.... Raise it back up before making any adjustment, do not adjust it with the suspension loaded.....
