17x8 Year One Rallyes - not enough stud thread to fit
« on: July 11, 2017 - 12:25:47 PM »
Hello all!   Tried installing the new 17x8 rallyes on my '70 Cuda vert.  The new 17x8 rally's wheel is quite thicker at the hub than my stock 15x7 Rallye wheels.  Hence more of the stud is used up sitting flush. Here's a pick of my front brake rotor/hub.  Does this look normal? The stud protrudes .75"

Rule of thumb is the lug nut needs to make at least seven complete revolutions to safely secure the wheel. Best solution if the stud is too short is to have longer studs press in. With the 17" wheels on, how many revolutions of the lug nut is able to grip the stud?

Those don't look like the right studs... Thats an original 70 two piece rotor they take long shouldered studs....

How are the studs in the rear?

Maybe one or two, even if it catches at all.

Thanks for the info.  Easiest would to press in longer studs.  I haven't checked the rear yet, but I will tonight.

Good news. The rear studs are long enough.  Have to purchase some 7/8 hex lugs. The stock 3/4 hex are not enough hex diameter to safely secure the 17x8 wheels

Pull off a rotor, knock a stud out & measure it.... Probably around 1.25" long, the correct stud will be a 1 7/8....

Thx! Do the new studs need to be pressed in with an Hyd-press?

It is the preferred method but plenty have been drawn in with the lug nut.... Personally I don't like stressing the lugs that hard.....

3/4" are more than adequate.

I used them on my Wrangler that had 135lb wheel/tire assemblies.

Yeah, thinking that too.  Year One suggested 7/8 with a 2.5" length.  I think that may be more useful for the '72+ Rallye center cap.
