my 74 300 dually gets between 10 and 12 loaded (13,000-18,000) and 13-15 not loaded, and Im pretty sure it will outtorque a hemi. (its just a 318). Im not sure where they went wrong, but I dont understand why a truck can haul ass light, and get so slow loaded. (my 318 magnum is a terd with a trailor too)

I get about 17 mpg city and about 20 hwy with an empty truck, and I was getting about 14 pulling hte trailer if my calculations were correct.  I only used about a quarter of a tank between the two trips that i made with that much weight, so it's hard to calculate.  I don't think thats too bad for a 345 horse 4X4 considering my 97 F150 4.6L only got 16 mpg at best.

I,m not trying to start a argument on trucks, but what was your fuel mileage like loaded up like that? I have tried all the new trucks ford, chevy and dodge and let me tell you that none of the gas models on any of them were any good, on fuel or for pulling (especialy up hills). The hemi, loaded with my welding equipment and pulling my trailer was getting between 8 and 9 mpg, now the dodge diesle is a different story(they get 10 - 13 mpg loaded), which is all any of them get.

If you regularly do this kind of weight you need a Diesel. End of story

My lil 318's do just fine, without the cost of a cummins! I can buy a lot of gas foro what it would cost to buy me a cummins!

On our trip to Carlisle we towed a 1800 lb trailer and a 3600 pound Chally with my '03 Hemi Ram 1500.  So, with a total weight of over 10,000 lbs the truck ran as if there was no weight behind her.  We got 12.5 mpg loaded.  I was happy.  But, my next truck will be a Cummins....much better gas mileage and lasts forever (so Chryco keeps telling me).

You probably did better than we did in the Chally driving over to Carlisle at 75-80 behind Dave and Jeff towing their cars, lol. But please Rev. when you decide to get the diesel would you consider selling me your truck? She is pretty.

WOW! there is something wrong with it! Cause my 318 never get under 8, and that is pulling heavy or plowing! What gears are in it?
And, I dont have a power problem, and dont need a diesel, would like one, but would rather save my money. Pulling this kind of load, the cummins dont get any better fuel ecnomy.

Rev, that's pretty good mpg for towing up there. Probably having Rusty in there knocked a little mileage off  I guess your Ram is broke in now...

Yep, she now has just over 16,000 miles on her.  I was very impressed by how well it towed the chally. I love that truck!

Driving through the mountains in VA and NC it sure was fun going up hills -- keeping at speed limit, towing the chally,  and passing other brands (wont mention them here) and seeing their expressions in the rear view mirror.

Also, we even got honks from Chevy's and Fords
