cuda billboard vinyl location...location?
« on: July 14, 2017 - 11:22:48 AM »
so I noticed while placing my billboards vinyl's into place they have a small portion for the front section that is "marked" with a small oval-ish rectangle... for the door handle?, I am wondering is this just for basic help aligning it or is this to be aligned with a particular part of the door handle/ finger relief, or the handle lever itself?

or is this just to help when cutting the relief for the handle hole after billboard installation?

well it doesn't match the handle location or size of the handle, it falls somewhere with in the handle location but that's why I posted this question....
is this to be aligned with a particular part of the door handle/ finger relief, or the handle lever itself, or is this just to help when cutting the relief for the handle hole after billboard installation?

also I read that the rear sections are to be "centered" so the space below to wheel well and to top edge of fender is the same, but I only see this on cars with out the wheel well hoop trim, so with the trim on, should the graphic be closer to this trim then to the top of fender edge? or should entire graphic be shifted up?

so I have another question I read that the rear sections are to be "centered" so the space below the graphic to wheel well and graphic to top edge of fender is the same, but I only see this on cars with out the wheel well hoop trim, so with the trim on, should the graphic be closer to this trim then to the top of fender edge? or should entire graphic be shifted up, so that the graphic would be spaced evenly between wheel well trim and top of quarter panel?

If you install the large quarter panel decal first (which is recommended)and have it aligned properly with the body lines the small engine call out decal on the door will only have one place to be properly aligned. when I installed mine the door handle cut was a reference but then cut larger to fit properly.  The same is true for the quarter panel side marker light opening, once the decal is installed you will have to cut it out to fit the opening. Hope this helps.

all helpful hints, but still no one knows if its to be centered from wheel well to top of fender or from wheel well trim to top of fender?

I have seen it both ways but want to know what it was originally, kinda of a major part just to put it on, then find out later it was to be 1/4 inch higher or lower.

thanks, mopardave but I do already have this , what I have been working off of...but still no mention of wheel well trim hoop...maybe I can assume they put them all on this way (as pictured) then if it was to receive the hoops those got added on after the billboard? so billboard placement did not change?

so as it seems no one knows, I have gone through hundreds of pictures and have found one claiming to be unrestored cuda with billboards. by this picture it looks to be closer to the wheel hoop trim then the top of the fender which makes me think they put on billboards, all in the same location; spaced evenly ,then this particular model received the wheel arch hoop trim, which covers up small part the fender painted edge making it look closer then the top. so this is how I will install mine.

You also have to realize that humans were installing these stripes.  Even though the factory specified a specific place, that doesn't mean those guidelines were followed exactly.  People make mistakes.  I'm sure they had very little time to install those.  They probably weren't worried about getting it down to the nearest 1/16".  If it was close, it was good enough.

Another thing to consider is WHEN the stripes were installed.  Were they installed BEFORE the wheel well trim or AFTER.

alright so I think I have the position marked correctly, all is clean and ready for installation. but I have some last questions.

1.
the vinyl has a white paper-ish film over the outer surface, do I want to remove this when I install the graphic or after?
("googled" and seen the GYC guy do it that was on a 71 cuda billboard graphic)
some say to leave it and install, because the vinyl is easy to scratch or stretch if this film is removed
but then others say remove this film then install, otherwise you cant see really what your doing plus if there are any imperfections in the vinyl installation until its too late then have to resolve to pin holes to relieve etc.

2.do I have to heat vinyl to get it to fit tightly in tapered holes for door handle and turn indicator?
I have not found anything really pointing out these step in particular, I did see where Rick's billboard instructions pointed out the use of a heat gun for the door jam area, so wonder if the same is needed for these holes?

3. do I do these holes at  same time as main body of vinyl or later,  and do I "re-wet" certain edges with or without heat or do these parts "dry"

I have done a lot of body vinyl's on cars but never one over these shapes and never in one big solid sheet... a lot of pinstripes, tare and layered graphics so I want to be prepared to do this right.

ya, some input from someone who has done this would really help all of us who are waiting to do this, particularly

 On Graveyard carz
Mark installed the billboard on the 71 cuda
He let his daughter and painter try it and screwed it up.
I recall they sprayed the wrong side removed the wrong film.
