1970 AAR Ebay. Need buying Advice Please.
« on: August 19, 2017 - 07:06:13 PM »
I'm seriously looking at this recent 70' AAR on Ebay for $68K
I have ran the vin and plate and it checks out. I had the sales guy text me 56 additional pictures. There is a small rust spot on the lower passenger door. A hole in the headliner about a 50cent piece. Cut in passenger seat. Has MSD ignition kind of odd to me. Is this a good price? Anything I should be looking at closely?

If you want to see an additional pic to help me evaluate just send me a text.

Thank you for your help in advance.

So my two cents: this is not a killer deal but 60k seems a fair price. It's a very nice car but a rust spot is a little disappointing. Hopefully that's minor and doesn't require immediate work or turn out to be more.

The burnt orange paint was actually very popular for 1970. I seem to recall reading color production numbers somewhere that showed it to be as popular as a few high impact colors. Can't say I recall seeing it on an AAR so maybe that's what he meant by rare.

Final thoughts...you cannot restore a car right these days for less than 30k (likely way more) and a trashed AAR will cost you 25-30k so if you could get this one for 60k, you're probably ahead of the game. This is a car that won't lose value if you treat it right. It's been my experience people fret over the purchase price too much, afraid they will pay 5k more than it's worth at the time. In the end, you only live once and you won't care about what you paid years from now as you're cruising down the back roads to some car show. Just crawl around the car and verify all numbers personally.

Beekeeper, great advice! Thank you!  I need to verify engine block and trans numbers. Any other numbers I need to look at? Do they have the vin# on them? How do I verify. I'm probably buying sight unseen more than likely as I'm in Memphis, TN.  Yes I'm disappointed with the small rust spot on the door.  The only other one I would consider is the 1970 Convertible on eBay for $48K

The vert has allot more wrong than the AAR...  Not saying the AAR is great but without polling those who know lots of history it seems like a decent car....  Might email Barry Washington..... sixpak340@att.net

Definitely a good call. Barry is quite the guru on these cars. He might even know something about this particular car.

I have a convertible Vette. It's fun at night and early morning. When the sun is out, the sun is like a blowtorch on you without the top up. I think you will be happy with a AAR.

As far as numbers, there is a small VIN stamping on the block right above the oil pan. There is a vin stamping on the top radiator cross support and another on the top of the cowl next to a plastic screen. With the hood open, it's easy to spot. Ideally, he will have a paper build sheet found in many cars. Obviously, the VIN on the dash needs to match the fender tag and other numbers.

The Cuda sold. I decided not to purchase. Barry was very helpful. I'll keep my eye out for another one.
Thank you to the forum members that helped me make a decision.

One bit of advise, I don't know your intended use so that would have a bearing but I've seen guys avoid cars with issues, hold out for just the "right" car only to find out when you have a high level car you become more of a "care taker" than an owner, the car is to valuable/important/significant to enjoy driving.... Sometimes the better approach is to buy a car with flaws but negotiate accordingly....

That is pretty solid advice. I've owned cars that were too nice. There's a lot of piece of mind driving a really nice "driver."  One other thing I've seen is guys who are trying to find a car with very specific options, in a certain condition, at a certain price. Compromises usually have to happen unless you're willing to build it yourself.

That might be the best advice you will get.
