    Looking to buy a Group 27 Red Top Battery.
    I have owned 3 or 4 of them back in the 90's. Was never happy with their life. I got 2 or 3 years out of them. At that time they were  159.00 a pop. Are they any better now and how much are they running and any suggestions on where to purchase one.

    A lot of people cut the bottom out of them and gut the case.  Then, they install a smaller battery inside.  There are pictures online if you look for them.  You'll never have to replace that red top again.

    Actually, I think I read where some of them come that way already. Cut the bottom out and see.  :2cents:

    the newer repro batteries are maintenance free (AGM, no acid or water required).
    I bought my last battery 8 years ago from Turbo Start, never had problems with it.

    I too have the Turbostart agm purchased in 2010, working great.  I use the Battery Tender when its not being driven.  I hear other owners love Antique battery or Restoration battery, but one of them require a proprietary batt charger.

    I used to get 6 year plus out of mine back in the 80's & 90's. The last two I purchased barely made it two years each. I have now gutted two of mine & run the lightweight racing batteries in them. Goes from weighing like 46 lbs to 12 lbs also. I have gotten three years out of this last conversion so far. Still looks stock from the top. I feel it seems to crank over quicker than before also.

    I am sure I am the oddball here but I am running 3 yellow tops and 1 red top Optima, I have a diehard platinum in my Viper. IMO the key is a battery tender device, for an optima I believe CTEK is the best by far (I have quite a few different ones and the CTEK is the only one that brought back a drained yellow top recently).

    I have one battery that I have had for 10 years, another for 6, etc. There are some really good batteries out there now, for me it is about the convenience of being able to go locally and picking one up.

    The AGM batteries are over 3 hundred .  Herb's had an empty red acid battery at Carlisle for 395.00.

    I purchased a liquid acid bat 2008 and still going. I went to Interstate batteries and had them fill and charge it.

    Autozone has red top's for $237, but you can find them online for sub $200.

    I always wondered how to do this.
    What kind of mess is it to cut bottom and gut it?
    You use a cutoff wheel?
