Edsel wheel studs on my Cuda ?!?!?
« on: September 01, 2017 - 09:04:23 AM »
'70 Cuda
Front disk brake wheel stud was shot and needed replaced. Popped it out and went to parts store. Nothing they had for E bodies was the same. NAPA guy used a mic then went through books. Turns out its for late 50's - early 60s Fords, All Edsels and some Jeeps.
Previous owner lead me to believe he had put Ebody disks on, but they aren't. Was/Is there an aftermarket kit that would use rotor/hubs like mine, assuming the bolts are standard for these rotor/hubs ?

Seriously doubt you have Edsel/Ford/Jeep  rotors. You may have an alternate sized knurl on the wheel stud. This is actually not that uncommon as a stud gets stripped, replacements get sourced, and if the original hole was reamed a bit, oversized parts may have been installed. Not sure why you would want to replace the whole disc system because of a stud knurl variation. Use the Jeep stud, put if back together, note the part number in case you have another one fail.

My guess is it is original 70-72 disc brakes, but the original studs are virtually obsolete & the parts guy likely found info on the 73-74 studs or the studs for drum brakes since lots of catalogs list them as correct.... Picture below is what it should look like..

For years AMC AMX owners were not able to purchase disc brake wheel studs. In the day, an AMX owner had to buy a complete rotor/ hub assembly that came with wheel studs swedged in place. The demand grew with time. An AMC vendor about three years ago, got with a supplier to manufacture AMX wheel studs. I spoke in person with the AMX wheel stud supplier. This supplier orders them for the vendors. He gave me a wheel stud that has the same shoulder, knurl and thread length as the wheel studs on my 68 AMX.  MY POINT IS: a supplier could do this for a Cuda/Challenger disc brake rotor and vendors would have a source for these rare wheel studs. :clapping:

The brakes you have use the big bearings & if you track down a set of 11.75 caliper brackets & rotors it's an easy bolt on upgrade....  Caliper & spindle stay the same..
