Aluminum Heads Issues with dis similars metals. Corrosion
« on: September 29, 2017 - 11:08:07 PM »
Not an Expert, Yet I am a mechanical contractor, and even basic  water heater hook ups, Steel  take  water fitting to copper house  pipe,  you must install dialectric fittings to stop corrosion,

I have seen sacrficial anodes in radiator caps   as well as same on out board motors to prevent aluminum failure on outboards,

What is recommended  when using Aluminum heads  and  even aluminum radiators,   ( forgive typing, Im 63 an cantr see to well )

Thank  Guys

Sacrificial Anodes should be considered standard practice....

I do not believe anodes are used in OEM applications to-date. The Hemi comes with aluminum heads, timing cover, water pump housing and radiator core. OEMs are achieving their corrosion resistance via the coolant itself, but that is not saying that you shouldn't install an anode.

It's got me thinking where I could stick one..

I've replaced radiator drain plugs with sacrificial anodes intended for this purpose.

I use coolant designed for different metals but I think the anode is great insurance. My Old Vette has an expansion tank which is aluminum and not always fill completely full. I had it out a few weeks back and was shocked how much corrosion was inside where air was exposed. I need to do this as well or I'm gonna have big trouble someday.

Should be noted their anodes are priced from $2.85-$30.77 depending on the anode you need. Do comparisons and see what is the best bang for the buck! Summit has never let me down and when you combine the anode with other stuff the shipping is free if total is over $99.00. I usually get most of the Summit parts the next day after ordering. For instance yesterday, I ordered a lower radiator hose and four Gabriel Shocks for my 73 Challenger and the parts were delivered in less than 24 hours. No shipping costs. Helps to live in sunny California maybe.

True... And $3.35 gets you the same one summit sells for a radiator... $30.77 gets you one over an inch in diameter & six inches long.....

If you select USPS Priority Mail, orders under $100.00 cost between $3.95 to $11.95 to ship (depending on weight and distance), while those over $100.00 ship free.
