Big Block Trick Flow Heads
« on: October 24, 2017 - 05:20:00 PM »
What are the latest opinions on the installation of these heads,
and their performance. Are they really just bolt on in place of stock??

I found so far (in my 522 build) that the TF heads will need longer pushrods when used with roller rockers, something like 9.850" depending on your cam base circle. That's around 1" longer than stock. You will need special head bolts/studs and the pistons must be notched to take the 2.19" intake valve. The bolts for the rocker arm shafts over the oil holes need to be longer as well. No big deal really. MLS head gaskets are recommended if the block is machined smooth enough for them.

thanks, good info. Funny, I have a solid roller, yet my Stage VI heads only need stock pushrods?

The TF's have long than stock valves similar to, but not quite the same as Indy. I highly recommend TF's, the port flow is very impressive!

I have them on my 522.  The stock rockers don't work either.  I had to buy the Harlan Sharp rockers for these heads.  I agree with all the other info that was posted as well except I didn't have to notch the pistons with the larger valves.  And I have a good bit fo cam lift and 1.6 rockers.  They are impressive pieces.  And make sure to get the valve springs depending on roller or flat tappet setup.  Turns out the larger springs are designed for roller cams only.  I found out the HARD way and trashed the motor after wiping all the lifters and cam lobes due to too much spring pressure.  Only place I found that information was on summit's website.  :(

Sorry to hear about your cam/spring issue! :( I'm running a flat tappet cam but changed the retainers and locks from 7 deg to 10 degree. Highly recommended if running a cam with over .500" lift (titianium as well for over 6000 rpm operation). If anyone is retro fitting with these heads be sure to check the piston to valve clearance. The piston valve pockets need to be large enough to accommodate the larger 2.19" intake valve. I'm using Icon pistons on this build and there is plenty of room. This may not be the case with earlier piston designs.  :2thumbs:

would hope that all these important details would be spelled out in a pamphlet from
Trick Flow when you buy these heads. I have reverse dome JE pistons. Hope they have the
necessary recess, before I buy the heads.

You will want to cross check the valve spring specs for the cam you're planning to use. You can call JE for the valve pocket size of the pistons you have.

My 522 also had dish pistons.  I don't remember the spec, but that may be why I have no piston/valve issues.

if I recall, the present springs are 450 lbs open, and 175 closed. But they are 15 yrs old now.

Latest Car Craft evaluates the Trick Flow Big Block Mopar heads. Seems with my existing
setup, just switching the heads and intake might get me near 700 hp. Scary!

Ya, the Car Craft article compares them with the 240's.
