    Anybody out there own a Liberty? Drive or lease one? Please tell me what you think as I am thinking of buying one for the wife. She currently drives a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee which she loves. Can we haul a car and trailer with the Liberty? Any input is appreciated. ::)

    Hey Bluecuda, I'm not real familiar with the liberty other than it looks shorter wheelbased than the Cherokee and would not tow as well. The shorter and lighter you go with the tow vehicle the more problems your're asking for. Just my opinion but when it comes to towing, the bigger the better. You may have plenty of power to tow but getting there safely is more important than the power IMO.

      I don't think the Liberty would be much of a tow vehicle.

    We have a Liberty,traded in the Durango and bought it last August to make the wife happy.I liked the Durango for towing and hauling but the wife wanted something that handled better and drank less fuel.The Durango had a great towing capacity and but I wouldn`t tow anything too heavy with the Liberty and in fact I didn`t even bother putting a hitch on it,instead I am working on making my `85 Ramcharger plow truck road worthy.

    I've heard from more than a few people that the 4.0L Jeep enigine is VERY unreliable.  :-\ :-[
    I WAS looking at ojne then decided to hunt down a V8...didn't buy one because now I'm looking for another E-Body.  ;D

    in what ways (IE what specific issues) did you hear the inline-6 4.0 engine is "VERY unreliable", please expand on your statement.

    I think Ive seen more Liberty's getting towed (like behind an RV), than actually towing something else.

    Sure  :thumbs: I'm not 100% sure but many car yards said they were always coming in for repairs, what repairs I hear you ask, have no idea.
    But coming from salesman themselves that can't be good.  :-\

    Also there engine mounts are easily worn, basically poorly built.  :( Like as bad as a Ford Explorers saftey rating.  :laughing:

    4.0L engines have proven very reliable, anyone that says differently doesn't know what they are talking about.

    Having said that, the 4.0L engine is no longer in production and was never in a Jeep Liberty.  I would not consider the Liberty for towing anything but a small trailer. It is rated to tow 5000lbs but jeep and trailer together are not to exceed 5600lbs.

    Sorry JS27 but I know what I heard and from who (many gurus and all).  :thumbs: I'm sure they are reliable just not as good as other engines.

    Nothing, they were just saying that I should look at buying the more reliable 5.L V8 Jeeps.  :thumbs:
