383 HP block

I am picking up a 70 383 hp block.  I know the hp block had a different cam/ exhuast manifolds/ etc..., but are there any differences in the actual block.  Also he said he has a cast crank that will go with it.  What crank did the 383 HP motors have cast or stee?  How much hp can the cast crank handle?

all but 70/71  383 2 bbl engines had steel cranks , the blocks are not different , & the cast crank will handle 500 hp

Don't mean to hi-jack but what exactly is better steel or cast crank?


What would mu 440hp engine have? built late 69-early 70. (Numbers 70 Challenger car)  :thumbs:

My understanding was that the cast crank B motors started in 71 in the 2 bbl motors.

All 440s used a steel crank into mid 73
 the steel crank is stronger , but unlike GM the cast cranks are more than adequate for up to 500 hp , the big hassle with the cast crank is the external balancing

If this motor had a cast crank, I would be just a wee bit leary of it being a HP block...........which should be easily identifiable, but if the steel crank got away from it, one of two things probably happened.........
1,   The engine had a major probably and the crank was scarred too much to turn, or 2 its not a HP block,  I suppose someone may have disassembled the engine and the crank just got away........but I would check to see if the block needs align bored and I would take a close look at the rods and main webbing in the block..........just fyi.......

Yea I saw the block and it is an HP block.  It is pretty much from intake to pan.  Has the 906 heads and has been honed with new cam bearings and freeze plugs.  Also has the HP 4 brl intake.  What is the story with that intake.  How does it flow and would it be suitable if I want to get about 350 hp out of the engine?  I am gonna search now, but is there a post that explains the differences in big block heads?  I imagine there is.
