73 Challenger Bumpers
« on: July 11, 2005 - 08:38:16 AM »
Due to problems finding bumper fillers, and the fact that I do like the 72 look.  I am considering trying to modify the front and rear bumpers to "tuck in".

and words of advise, pics helpful hits etc.

I have a set on the car, that are banged up, but I have a nice set of 73 bumpers (could use rechroming, but will live with them for now.

I would love to have the chrome bumper gaurds from a 72, or a whole 72 bumper ...but doubt budget will allow for that.

The fronts should be easy. On my wife's 73 cuda, I just slotted the bracket holes where the bolts go through to bolt them to the frame rails. I used a torch and then cleaned up the openings. Just eliminate the filler and slide the bumper back 1/2". I think I just used two of the bolts on each side.  I removed the thick bumper reinforcement altogether and bolted the bumper directly to the brackets. You will have to open up a couple of the holes in the brackets for the bumper bolts to go through.
The rears can be a little trickier. The best way of course is to locate a '72 bumper setup. The 70-71 wouldn't be correct because of the slots in the bumpers on the 72 up cars. We have used the later style brakcets by cutting them up and bolting the frame halves on the car and the bumper halves on the bumper. You then need to  locate the bumper and cut more of the brackets off until the brackets are close. You then have to tack them in place with a mig and when you're happy, remove the whole setup and weld it up. It's difficult but not impossible.
If you're painting the bumpers to match, you can weld up those big bumper guard holes and grind them down, putty them, block, prime and sand prior to painting. They will look great.  Hey, if Chip Foose can do it, you can do it.
Good luck

concept is sound, fair amout of work...
just none of that equipment...sux but I will have to find someone round here to help.

sad part is that most of our Mopar people here are out to make a buck, or are just in it to ride and meet ... as long as you have a ride and want to meet to.

The Lowcountry of SC was so much easier to deal in.  there are no deals here

I'm thankful that in this part of the country (northwest Arkansas) there are still "car" people out there that will help each other out. It's truly amazing how many musclecars are around here. I manage a body shop and will help out on the little projects when time allows. Unfortunately, I stay pretty busy with restorations most of the time and I barely find time to work on my own stuff. I've built musclecars for so long that I tend to forget that not everyone has access to the shop equipment like I do. Hope you find someone that can help out.

thanx.  my plan right now is to get her into the shop, straighten the frame, and make sure she runs correctly.  then I will put her back in the shop later and do all of the body work at one time.  I just wanted the front bumper fillers to make sure everything lined up correctlty.

but thanx for the info...

OK, OK, I have another question ...looks like things might be coming together btter than I thought.  I found someone that has done this and may be willing to help me.

his memory is fuzzy about what year challenger rear bracketts he used.  I see tons of stuff listed as 70-72.  this bothers me as most of what I know is that 70-71 and 72-74 typicaly work togther.  so can you or anyoneelse verify what rear bumper bracketys are needed to make this move?

I would love to find a 72 rear bumper w/ the chrome guards, that would be the nicest way to go.

also, the front bumper insert (rear?) do you have to pitch those as well, or do you keep them?
