PS hose issues with 6.4 swap
« on: April 04, 2018 - 08:18:29 AM »
Hey guys,

I am nearing the end of my 70 Cuda pro-touring build with a 6.4 swap. I am having issues with my braided PS lines blowing off my Magnumforce rack and pinion using the Mopar Performance 77072448 OEM pump. I am using a Billet Specialties remote reservoir which should not make any difference. The PS pump comes in a kit with the pulley which a lot of people use on these swaps. I bought the car with the suspension already on it but had a March pulley kit with what looks like a GM pump.

Has anyone else had these issues when using this pump and R&P? I am going to order some new lines from Magnumforce to start with because that is the logical and less expensive beginning. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Daryl

Sounds like a hose problem. I made my own high pressure hose using braided PTFE hose, no issues after 2,500 miles.

Sounds like, how are the hoses made? I will say that I was told when researching my PS system not to use SS braided line on the high pressure side, however I have seen it in other applications so I am not sure its applicability there. I personally used Fragola high pressure line and ends. You can build the lines yourself.

Might want to check the pressure on you pump as well to make sure there isnt a problem there. Most new pumps produce 1400 PSI or more, so you need to match every. There is a PS regulator on the market which will allow you to reduce the pressure to the rack (I have one on my Cuda as a part of my adjustable PS system, but the car isnt running yet so I cannot determine if it works or how well it works).

SS braided lines with PTFE/Teflon are just fine for high pressure hydraulics. Their rubber core relatives are definitely not.

I agree that the SS hoses with PTFE liners will take the pressure. When I called Fragola when I was doing my system they recommended one of their other products stating that the hose ends were better suited for things like PS systems.

So I had SS lines w teflon and the pressure was too much for them. The connections between the rack fittings and lines is the issue. The hose clamps just can’t hold the pressure and literaly made yhe SS and teflon separate. Thinking about trying new fittings and some higher pressure lines. Seems like the next logical step.

"Hose clamps"? The ferrels within the compression fitting?

PTFE braided hose is rated at 2,500psi, you're not exceeding that.

Were you actually using clamps or were you using the actual fittings (the kind the hose goes into)? On the high pressure side you definitely need fittings regardless of what hose you are using.
