LOOKING FOR USED SET OF THE "PIN TYPE" 11.75 CALIPER BRACKETS
« on: April 04, 2018 - 04:34:59 PM »
Hi guys; Looking for a used set of "PIN TYPE" caliper brackets for the 11 3/4" rotors that will be compatible for my e-body. Not looking to buy the new ones. The new pin type reproductions are cost prohibitive for me. Below is a list I looked up for conversion from the 11" with the larger inner rotor bearing. I have enclosed a pic below. The left one figure "A" has a measurement of 3 1/2" while figure "B" on the right has a measurement of 3 1/8" Hope someone can help me out.  Thanks,Dave

His list is wrong, a 74 Challenger with have 10.87 brakes not 11.75.... He's listing all the pin caliper equipped vehicles... But 95% of those have the smaller rotors....

11.75 brackets are kinda hard to find....

Correct. That was taken from a list of cars that are supposed to have the spindle for the "big" inner rotor bearing. And those spindles can all be used to upgrade to the 11 3/4" rotors from the 11" ones. Some were the pin type calipers and some were the slider type. If I cannot hunt down the pin type brackets reasonably,I will more than likely just use the slider type,as the caliper brackets are much cheaper.

The Ram man feels that the pin type calipers are superior to the slider type and that the pin type brakes pads have a larger surface area.  Wayne seems to know what he's talking about, but those pin type caliper brackets he is offering are very expensive at $400.00 a set. Here's the You-tube video. At 4:12 he notes the reasons why he feels that the pin type are superior to the slider type. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2QKhpzxrHE

I am assuming he has some kind of exclusivity to the reproduction of these pin type brackets, hence the price. And maybe the reason for the lip service from him about the superiority of the pin type calipers. I don't know. I just wish they were more reasonably priced. The slider type reproductions are $100.00.

Its my understanding about the requested pin-type caliper brackets that it doesn't matter about the rotor diameter... instead, its the spindle year that makes the difference... basically you need the caliper bracket for the later years (73-up) that had used the pin type caliper.   That's what I've done (in progress now).

The RAM MAN's brackets are expensive... buy them IF you can't find used ones and are in a hurry.  Searching through the pick-n-pull junk yard listings can get them... just takes time to locate.. then pay whatever they want plus shipping if included.
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

Sorry Mitch, your understanding is wrong, there are different brackets for the 10.87 & 11.75 rotors, the bracket is where the caliper location is changed....

The spindles did change to bigger bearings in 73 & the big rotors have big bearings..... You can get around the spindle swap by using Doc Diff's adapters, so the 70-72 spindles are fine..... Unfortunately the caliper brackets are getting harder to find...

If your walking junkyards they are easy to spot... On the small rotor (10.87) the area from the lug surface to the rotor surface is very squared off.... On the 11.75 there is a pronounce taper to the transition....

just out of curiosity, were the bigger brakes an option or were they standard on something (I would assume HP cars?).

They didn't come on any of the muscle cars, they showed up around 76 on cop cars, taxis & cars with tow packages.....   But because Chrysler kept many critical dimensions the same parts can be swapped around & our cars can be improved....  Use to be cheap & easy, not so much these days... But the stuff works very well & every time I've done a swap it's always a noticeable improvement....  Where as I've worked on three vehicles with Wilwood conversions & all three came to me cause they didn't stop well... I improved every one but none worked better than a 11.75 conversion with good pads.....

Thanks for all of that info. Nice to hear it from someone who has experience and that you like the factory style units. Let me ask you this. Do you prefer the 'pin" or "slider" type calipers or is the difference negligible? Did you get a chance to watch Wayne on the video link I posted? Seems to know his stuff. I just wish he were reasonable his pin caliper brackets. It would make it much easier to buy a new set from him rather than having to hunt around for an original one. The good news is I am in no hurry to find a set of these 11.75" brackets. I won't need them for at least a year.

Doctor Diff is selling the 11.75 'slider" type caliper brackets for $100.00. Ebay link below.

The slider style calipers are okay, I prefer the pin style but I wouldn't spend $300 more to get them... The slider style are prone to rattle but if you tighten the tabs that lock the pads in place they are fine....

The Ram Man has quite a reputation for shady business practices so I would avoid giving him any money....  I have no personal experience just read about lots of other peoples.....

Thanks for the heads up and your input and tips to make the slider style perform better should I decide to use them. I wouldn't even consider spending $400.00 on a set of those reproduction pin type brackets. Like I said.I won't need those 11.75" brackets for at least a year. I just like to collect parts well before they are needed. A lesson i've learned in regards to restoring these old cars.

Yup, you grab the parts when you can, they might not be there later....  I've watched NOS go away, used parts dry up, reproductions drop out of production & go away....  You see a part that you think your gonna need grab it..

I've got the pin type setup for the 11" brakes. Do you think the 11.75 ones are quite a bit more superior? I wonder why Doctor Diff doesn't sell the 11.75" pin type caliper brackets.Looked on his site.Don't see them.

This might be of interest. This company (AR Engineering used to sell a kit that allows you to run Viper calipers, unfortunately (and to Wild RT's point) they no longer make it, however this link has some really good information. I made my own plate and am running Viper Calipers on my Cuda; it isnt rocket science and I would not be afraid to build my own system (obviously as I already have). Think about it, the bracket just holds the caliper over the rotor, so long as the caliper isnt twisted and isnt too close and the bracket is strong enough you are in.
