340 Six Pack in 1962 Bristol 408
« on: April 08, 2018 - 07:43:42 AM »
Hello,

I have a 1962 Bristol 408, which i am putting a rebuilt 318 Poly into. (The original engine)
I have just taken out a 1970(?) 340 with a six-pack. I wonder how much it is worth.
The motor works beautifully, pulling well up to just over 100mph at medium revs through a push button torqueflight.
The engine number is GW340P33920520.

I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how much it is worth.
Thank you.
Rob

Going to be a little difficult to give you are price based on the information you provided. Once you get it out, you need to look at the date code on the side of the block to identify what year model car the engine was built for. That said, there are a lot of variables here that affect value; has it been rebuilt (specifically bored), is it a TA motor, if not, What year car was it put in originally, what heads are on it, is it all original, etc.

Perhaps a better way to approach this is that the engine will have the most value to someone who needs/wants a 340 specifically. If it isnt a TA motor then the 6 pack isnt original to the engine, the 6 pack could be an original TA/AAR outfit which makes it pretty desirable to the right person. Personally I would develop a package price, a price for just the engine and a price for the 6 pack.

To do that, you really need more information so that prospective buyers can determine whether they fit what they want. More pictures is always a benefit.

Good luck

Gonna need more info.... First I will tel you that the air cleaner has what is called the wide lip which points to the air cleaner came off a real T/A-AAR, that makes me think the carbs & intake may also be real deal parts....  Date codes & list numbers could confirm this.....  Next question is did the whole engine come from a T/A-AAR if it did the $$$ just went up substantially...  Look at the drivers  (starter) side of the engine, the cast part number will tell allot...

2780930  Is a standard 340
3577130TA Is a T/A-AAR block

Also look on the passenger side of the block just rear of the engine mount at the pan rail, the original VIN number should be there, if the car still exists that to will effect value...

The heads, T/A-AAR heads are special, the casting number is a common number but after casting they received special machine work...   Post a photo with the valve cover removed...

ROBINAKIRK: Welcome to the forum! Are you living in the UK? Bristol 408 I've heard of. Owened a few UK cars...61 A-H 3000, 64 XKE, 73 XJ6. Never seen a Bristol in person. About a 100 made per year? Is your 408 a right hand drive?

Thanks everyone,

The cast part number on the engine is 2780930-340-3.
I am travelling at the moment, but will get more photos when i return.

I am from the UK, but now live on Cape Cod. and have a thing for (rhd) British cars with American (Chrysler)motors.
I have two Bristols, the other one has a nice 383. and looking far too closely at Jensens!!

If the 340 is a standard 340, with a 6 pack added later, but all in good running order, what might i expect to get for it?

Let us know about the list #s & date codes on the carbs.... (When you get back home) that will have a factor....   The sixpack it self is the bigger portion of the value, the 340 is probably in the $600-$1000 range... The Sixpack is in the $1700-$2K range.... Unfortunately the air cleaner base has been cut, I wonder what it started out as... More photos would help... The lid is definitely the wide lip piece unless it's a repo which I seriously doubt it's worth $200 by itself... Since it was only used on T/A-AAR & A12 cars.....
