Clip placement for front and rear windshield molding
« on: April 28, 2018 - 07:48:14 AM »
Installing my front and rear windshield. The roof and Dutchman’s panel has been replaced. The holes for mounting the clips for the stainless trim are no longer there. I need to drill the holes and mount the clips before I put the glass in.
I have the clip kit for the front and back
1) does anyone have a PICTURES of the clip placement for the front and rear ?
2) do they all “hang over” a bit from the body line when mounted ? I assume none of them are recessed.
3) the rear window clip kit also has 2 strap/bracket like clips??? Not sure what these do ?
4) no clips go on the BOTTOM edge of the front glass I assume. ?
5) clip kit for the front has “extra” screws,,,, included. Are these used for the bottom portion of the molding ?
Thank you for any help.
Pictures would be great.
Doug.

I don't have measurements but went with the original holes in the framework.  And I don't think I have pics of the rear window........but will look deeper.

Dave. Thank you for taking the time to post all the pictures !! Appreciate it very much.
Most of the clips look “recessed” .....
I need to look at the trim I have to get a better idea how it attaches,,,,I just assumed the clips needed to stick up a bit above the body line.
Thanks again !!

Thanks so much for the detailed pictures.  I'm at the same point and a bit concerned on the depth for placing these screw clips.

FYI, I was fortunate enough to find a friend who is restoring his 70 Challenger. He has the front and glass out. I was able to see all of the clip holes in detail. I measured all of the spacing for the front and rear glass and was able to make the correct placement, transfer over to my car. I will say the majority of the clips except for those on the a pillar are almost flush or just sit slightly above the body line. The clips on the a pillar seem to sit even higher.
I plan on drilling the holes later today or tomorrow and will be mounting the remainder of the clips. Initially, I thought the clips were all recessed but again they appear to be just slightly above or almost flush to the body line as mentioned.

Any preference on butyl vs urethane for installing the glass ?

You are bound to get a few replies here as many (to include glass installers) say that Urethane is the only way to go. I have used both and cars were made for many years using butyl tape which is what I will be using when I install my glass. When I bought my windshield they asked how I was going to install it and I told them butyl tape; they told me it should not be used on windshields and if I remember right, even that it was illegal (perhaps here in WA state). When I asked why, they said that butyl tape doesnt hold the glass in place during an accident thus the occupants could "fly" out of the vehicle. Seems that is what seat belts are for but what do I know.
