440 Oil pan with best clearance to centerlink
« on: May 02, 2018 - 03:33:53 PM »
Can someone school me on oil pans please. 74 E body 440 auto standard suspension. What would be a 5 or 6 qt. oil pan recommendation which would give most clearance to center link. I have 699 pan now which is about 2 5/8 thick at rear portion of pan. With windage tray and 2 gaskets it is too close to center link. About 1/4 gap and rubs pan sometimes. There is about 3" from pan rail to center link and maybe something is wrong there??

I asked 440source about their 5qt and 6at pans they sell which are supposed to work, but they said they were 3" and 3 3/8" thick at rear portion.

Maybe there is something off with the motor mounts? I did add the poly trans mount.

Thanks for any replies.

I'll take some measurements on what i have but my first though is there is something gong on with the motor mounts. How much clearance do you have between the engine and the (Ralley?) hood?

Either your mounts are sagging or your drag link is in wrong...

With the right mounts and stock oil pan it should not be even close (as in not a question).

Ok. thank you for reply. The drag link is original one. I don't think it can be installed up side down, I will see if could be left side to right side reversed. I'm not sure what pan would be a "stock" pan - this is a 318 car originally and there are a bunch of pans they made. The motor mounts are Schumacher ones and air cleaner is close to hood with drop base. Will try adjusting those to get engine a little higher.

Just wondering what is expected distance from oil pan rail to drag link.

The dragline can be installed wrong & when it is the pan rubs...  Most pans have about 3/4" clearance...

Flipped center link left to right and now there is more room. About 1" now. Thank you 1Wild RT for suggesting I check that. So just to confirm the end on the drag bar with the larger bend goes to the passenger side (attached pic)? Drivers side has the straighter bend.
