1970 Challenger RT/SE
« on: May 20, 2018 - 05:38:56 PM »
The car is very solid as far as rails, very nice engine compartment, under rear seat is very nice, firewall cowl excellent, nice solid fenders, have all trim except front window trim, SE back window.. it will need front floor pans, trunk pan, lower qtrs, and roof skin due to the vinyl top like all of them.. I have another nice bulge hood and decklid 2 grills, all glass except windshield.. it needs interior the sun was not very forgiving to it but all there.. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things but overall very rare and very restore-able car $11,500 OBO Clean title located in Albuquerque, NM

Blows me away that anyone thinks this is a good deal.... In 2015 the car linked below was for sale for over a year before it found a buyer..... All original sheet metal including the trunk floor. Original numbers matching 440/727, beautiful paint, beautiful leather..... Eventually sold for 40K.... I knew the guy who owned it/sold it... And I owned it from 79-98, I restored it so I know how original it was.....

Now tell me how this rusty shell is a good deal at 11,500......

Well the $11,500 is down to $8500 which is still too much for what is there. The problem is that people see a car like you were talking about for $41K and then see this shell and think "oh I can build that for less than $41K" and ostensibly make money; problem is that they can't and after a couple of years and once the magnitude of the project sets it, it get put up for sale again and the cycle is repeated. The muscle car world has adopted the same methodology as the casinos; the potential of getting ahead or making out with just a little work.... Of course the realty is that this is pretty much impossible without having the experience to do all the work and a pile of parts available already and even then it generally is not a money making proposition.

The real trick is to find projects that have gone through the cycle enough times to now be fairly close to being done at a time when the current owner needs to dump them at a reasonable price. Of course the other side of that situation is if some of the work has to be redone.
Current Mopar

So true, there are always collector cars on eBay wherein the seller claims the Buy It Now is half of what they have invested.  Case in point, there is a 70 Challenger Vert in B5 Blue that has been heavily modified where in the seller claims $200k invested and willing to let it go for half that.  You can likely confirm that $200k by adding the current market value of a base vert, plus the many parts along with a good number for labor and not be too far off.  How much joy would that experience bring?

You would think for $100K the seller would have more pictures and more information, such as is it a R code car, is it a matching drive train, etc. Just says "fully restored" which as we all we know means completely different things to different people. Sounds to me like someone who had means got a big funnel out and poured money into a car that he thought or someone told him would be worth a half mil at least when done, then reality actually came crashing down and now he wants out. If I had dumped $200K into a car (which better be beyond perfect) I'd drive the wheels off it or show the crap out of it, certainly not sell it at 50% off...  :roflsmiley:
