Its possible that something came loose in the TQ. Very hard to diagnose via the internet.

put it up on the hoist and watched the crank move back and forth as the trans was shifted from park to neutral.it moved a lot, suprised it's running so good.

Same thing happened to me, crank walk. Didn't make noise all of the time, crank ate the bearing. The shop aligned the transmission and it's been fine since 2013, about 20K miles. Originally the bearing only lasted 8K miles after the engine was rebuilt and my original tranny housing was replaced (2011). At that time we never suspected there would be a misalignment.

auto trans?
Researching this and it seems this in not a common problem on 440's with an automatic trans. I doubt I have 1500 miles since I bought this short block that was supposedly gone through but I think it was as everything still looks fresh i.e. cross hatch on the cylinder bores, all ARP fastners etc. excellent oil pressure and ran very strong for what it was. Transmission is fairly fresh too, same miles as the engine with zero issues what so ever BUT something caused this.
I'm going to roll some new main bearings in it and see what happens for now and yank it in the fall for a rebuild or replace. I already have the thrust bearing out but I know the new one wont last long.

Yes, mines an auto - A904 & 318 ci. You're right, this is rare with automatics, more common with standards.
