I need some wiring help

Hey guys, some of you remember my challenger got put on the back burner awhile back but today I got the itch to go tinker and I need some help from my favorite E-Body gurus. Like alot of us my challenger had someone work on it before I bought it. It wasn't running when I bought it but that wasn't a big concern since I'm going to do a full restoration, however I was told the car was running when parked (due to the owners death) but I highly doubt it.

I have drawn some wiring diagrams to the best of my ability to represent the way its wired right now. The problem I'm having is no spark. The first picture shows the ignition system wiring as it is. The male/female connector coming from the distributor is not present but there is a solid black wire coming from the distributor to the - side of the coil. Since there is no connector coming from the dizzy the plug from the wiring harness isn't connected to any thing. On my 4 prong ballast resistor there is a black wire coming from one post that also has a blue wire connected to another post with nothing else connected.

On another prong there are 2 thicker brown wires. One looks like it goes to the + side of the coil and the other disappears into the wire loom. I've looked over the factory wiring diagram and some of this looks right but obviously not all of it.

 In my second photo it shows the alternator with what appears to be a dark green wire and a blue wire with a white tracer. Both go into a wire loom that runs along the intake manifold. About half way down the wiring loom it looks like the same wires come out and attache to a single female spade connector that isn't attached to anything. This confuses me because it looks like the same color wires are connected to the alternator regulator on the firewall that tun into another wire loom so what are the wires coming out of the loom on the intake for?

Sorry if this is a lot but I feel like I need to provide as much detail as possible. As always I appreciate any help you guys can give. PS: My wiring colors may be slightly off but I'm pretty sure there accurate.

This is going to take some research but I can tell you that it isn't right. Some questions

1. is the distributor a factory Mopar unit?
2. Do you have a factory service manual?
3. is the overall harness factory and just hacked up or is this someone's attempt at building something new?

I am attaching a diagram that might be of use. I would tell you to isolate each section and follow the wires and see where they go and if they are connected correctly. I will look it over tomorrow if I can get to it.

I don't believe it's a mopar distributor. It just looks like your generic parts store piece. What appears to have happened to me is someone bought a standard point distributor and tried to make it work in a car with electronic ignition.

Unfortunately I don't have a factory service manual and the harness is stock. I tried to print that wire diagram yesterday but it came out way to grainy to read while I was outside trying to trace wires.

So the distributor has points? You need to get to a base where you can then work from verses trying to sort out everything at the same time. Start with the distributor, make sure you have the right one for your car. They are readily available and you dont need to order up a high dollar unit, you just need a functional unit.

Go to this site, download the closest manual to your car (70 Challenger?). Its free and the manuals are pdf, you can then open it and go to the page you want and print it off. http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

I don't know what your financial status is or what your intentions are but in my experience, if at all possible I would just order a new engine harness and get rid of all that hacked up crap. The engine harness is separate from the lighting harness so you can just replace this part. Also and as mentioned, get a new distributor (even a local parts store one) so long as its an electronic version you should be ok.

Yea that's what I was thinking just get a new distributor and wiring harness so I could start fresh and know it's done right.

Thanks for the link to the service manuals I downloaded one and it's very thorough. Do you have any idea what those wires I mentioned laying down the edge of the intake could be? I looked at the diagrams but I'm still not sure what they are.

No idea about those wires on the manifold, It seems that they should not be there. Given the age of these cars and the amount of "fixing" they have undergone, its hard to tell. Id have to cut apart the loom and see what they are attached to. It could be anything.

A new harness will go a long way to sorting this out.
