Sad, Sad ending on my test drive
« on: February 13, 2019 - 08:43:57 PM »
Well my Cuda died on me last September and between working on getting my house ready to sell and holidays I couldn't get back to fixing it until 2 weeks ago. Anyway this past Satyrday I was on a 5 minute test drive to check where I was with dialing in the six pack. Sitting still waiting to turn left back into my neighborhood. WHAM!!! 22 year old kid delivering for Dominos didn't see me cause he was messing with his GPS and rear ended me at full speed, road is 55 mph and he was going every bit of that I am certain. He was in a Hyundai Santa Fe and it is of course totaled too. Luckily neither of us were hurt, however, the car I dreamed of having for 30 years and now have a lot of time in, is in pretty bad shape. It is insured for everything I have into it through Hagerty so I should come out ok. I do not think I am interested in keeping the car to repair. It will be a big job and I don't know if I've got the time or energy to take care of it. Not to mention how major it will be. But I also am not willing to let it go to great beyond and am going to try to facilitate it going to someone's loving hands who will utilize it properly. In case anyone here has an interest in it I will give some info for you.
72 Cuda, originally blue, now plum crazy, numbers matching 340, 4 speed, 8 3/4 rear. Was factory stripper with manual drums, manual 24:1 steering. 2nd owner added rally dash - of which I have all the gauges working, console, 3.91 gears and a complete six pack set up off a Purple AAR during the late 70's that was in his hometown. Car still has six pack, it is best I know, an original intake air cleaner base and top. Carbs have all been replaced through the years including 1 I did 2 years ago. The base is a true steel AAR/TA base. Since I have had the car I have replaced radiator with Champion aluminum, clutch, added TTI headers and X-pipe, viper front disc brakes with DR Diff kit, Firm Feel Stage 3 16:1 power steering, fast ratio arms, 1.06" torsion bars and adjustable strut rods. 1-1/4" Hellwig fr sway bar, 11/16" tie rods, Vintage Air a/c, LED taillights and tons of the accompanying small stuff. Two weeks ago I replaced timing chain, water pump and oil pump. I conservatively have $12,500 in parts and car was running, basically complete and painted when I got it. I have some old documentation, no fender tag, and some history with names and a few phone numbers. I do not have any idea yet of the salvage value that they will allow me to keep it for but I will be finding out within the week. The appraiser should be here Friday and I will see from there.
Just wanted to put it out here in case anyone is interested or has any advice from dealing with Hagerty on a situation like this.
Now for the bad part. Based on my cursory look it damaged, rear bumper and brackets, lower valance, tail panel, deck lid, both rear quarters, trunk floor, possibly rear floor. passenger side looks like the windows are down about 3" but they are not, the roof is up, drivers side is more like 1". Drivers door pushed forward to just overlap front fender so it wont open. Fuel tank is ruptured - which is why it couldn't come here last Saturday and has been at the wrecker yard. However it is being towed here tomorrow to sit until we reach an agreement. I didn't wat it sitting at Copart while everything was happening.

Wow!  :scared:  :scared:

Sorry to hear and see that. Glad you are ok!

Anything can be fixed....but I think yours has met its end.  :hyper:

Hopefully you can find another one and continue living your dream.

Thank you. I agree it is pretty far gone and a lot to fix for one of the less rare fish. I would still rather see it go to someone for parts t a minimum rather than crushed. I should come out with enough to replace it, possibly with something even nicer to begin. However I think I am leaning more towards a newer Challenger. Then who knows maybe I will come across a good deal on another Cuda or a Super Bee that will make a good starting point.

That really sucks big time.  Glad all involved are not injured, but dang that sucks.
I hope all goes well with the insurance and your search for a new mopar, whatever it may be.

That sucks!

You should turn out alright with hagerty.

Looks like it just became a full on parts car.
Seems like the front end would be great for another car needing all those parts.
Interested in hearing what it's going to be valued at.

At least your ok and you were not hurt.
Perhaps it's too bad the kid was not hurt to give him something to remember the situation by and hopefully not pull that crap again.

Well it kinda sucks a little bit, or a lot. Yeah it does suck. A lot. However yeah glad we are all ok. Though I wanted to whip his a** I wouldn't wish for a 22 year old to get hurt. That's younger than my youngest is. I have good feelings that Hagerty will come through for me. I am pretty sure they will declare it a total loss so it should be pretty cut and dry. My love affair with Mopes is far from over.

Ugh that’s tough to see, glad you’re okay. I’d say the car is likely toast as well.

One of my bigger fears of putting miles on my car is not quite wrecking the car, but my kids of myself getting hurt. The car can be replaced, I’m very glad to hear you are in good shape.

I can't imagine  that  feeling...  :puke: ....a gut hurt for sure.   Glad all is ok as far a people.......  Really looks all warped up.  Let us know how you come out with Hagerty as that is the insurance I have also.  Been with them for 11 years.   If they settle will they let you keep the car??  that will be interesting.

OH SNAP!!! Damn that was hit hard. As has been said, "anything can be fixed" but at what cost. That said, they are not making them anymore and would bet that there is someone who would be willing to tackle it if the price was right. It was not all that long ago that we would have scoffed at the idea of dragging a car out of a scrap yard and bringing it back to life, but we all have seen it done and some of those cars were worse that this one by far if you look at the amount of rust and damage that had to be dealt with. Throw this thing on a frame rack and start pulling.... Personally I would not advocate for parting it out just yet, it is after all an original 4 speed Ebody.

What a shame. I feel your pain. I'm surprised and glad you weren't injured. In 1996, my 73 Corvette was rearended by an 18-wheeler. The semi was stopped behind me at a red light. The light turned green when I was looking at a map. The semi driver couldn't see my Vette and plowed into it. The f'glass body shattered and I got a minor case of whip lash. Asked the CHP officer on the scene to feel the bump on my head from hitting the t-top frame and he did. The CHP said "Yep, you got a big bump on your head" After information was exchanged I went to Kaiser Hosp for x-rays and was fitted for a neck brace. The vette was considered totaled by the insurance company. I was awarded a very generous amount and sold the vette on my own, and received $3,000.00 for pain and suffering. Kaiser Hosp got wind of the $3,000.00 and wanted it. I said, the check was made out to me for body depreciation, pain, and suffering. If you want money for medical services rendered Kaiser Hosp will have to bill the negligent driver's insurance company. Evidently Kaiser Hosp did. FYI, neck injuries sometimes can take a while for discomfort to show up. Some days you might be doing something and feel pain in your neck and asked yourself, what is that all about? Then, you will remember the accident. Ask me how I know.

Well I agree it probably is a parts car now much as I hate it. I will keep everyone updated on how Hagerty handles it and what the salvage value is. If it is a total loss I have the option to buy it back for that salvage value. I dont think the kid will forget this anytime soon. He was very freaked out. He thought I was gonna be hurt, then thought his dad was gonna kill him. Then apparantly at the wrecker yard his mom went off on him.
There are alot of good parts on the car, everything I did to it has only been since 2012 and most has less than 500 miles on them. I dont really want to go through parting it out myself but that may work out best. I will see what transpires.
Thanks everyone for your well wishes.
